Title: Puppy food
Post by: krs123 on June 15, 2007, 06:49:01 AM
Good morning! I have my new furbaby on purina puppy chow because that is what the breeder had him on when  i brought him home last week. My co-worker has a son who works at a pet store and had recommended the brand of food that she has her pets on. It is the nutro-max. She brought me a bag of the puppy brand and i mixed a little with the puppy chow last night and this morning. Anyone use this brand? pros/cons? Do i need to have him and my other 4 yr old male on something like the nutro-max? My 4 yr old is also on purina dog chow. Also, about 15 minutes after he ate this morning he starting acting like he was going to vomit but nothing ever came up. Not sure if this was from the new food being mixed in or not. Also, when i try and add a smiley to my messages, it just puts the name of the smliey and no pic?
Thanks!
Kim

I use the Nutro Natural Choice line and have for  over 18 years.  I am very happy with my results from it.

You can checkout Whole Dog Journal for the best foods Purina has allot of corn & fillers in it.If you feed a high quality food you may pay more for it but you will feed less. I feed Canidae, Eagle Pack Holistic.

I've used Nutro Natural Choice, and I was satisfied with it, but Ozzy didn't seem to like it.  He will still eat the dry food stuffed into a frozen Kong toy.  Now, I use Nutro Ultra dry food, mixed with Science Diet wet food and he empties the bowl every time.

Ozzy's breeder and our vet have said the same thing.  What you are looking for is good "output" (in other words, poop).  You want firm, easy to clean up "output," which tells you that your furkid is getting all required nutrients.

Purina is not considered one of the better foods. Nutro is good, Solid Gold has great food, Innova-Evo which I use is rated high, Natural Balance is good, Chicken Soup for the Canine Soul is great,  Canadea is also excellent and not much more than what you spend at your grocery store or Walmart/Kmart/Target. Any of the foods you buy at a retail store or grocery store are not rated high,  but you have to go with what you can afford. :)
Remember even though the food you buy at a Hay and Feed store or Puppy store,  it might be a little more than the grocery store,  but on a better quality food;  you will feed less,  so therefore you come out even --most likely ahead, also less vet, dental bills.  I don't feed my dogs anything that has wheat gluten, ethozyquin, BHA, BHT, Soy in it .
Good Luck. :)

Mindy,
Zack gets some of the ultra too and I had Zena on it but we think she is allergic to the salmon and that is what set off the episode at Christmas with antibiotics and steroids and steroid ointment for her eyes.  Foolish daddy gave her some of Zack's when he was on vacation for 2 days and now we are trying to get her cleared up again with out going to the steroids.  I would love to use it all the time for both. Now she is on the chicken rice and oatmeal and doing pretty good. But we might try the lamb and rice to see if she does better on that.
They do both love any of them but really liked the ultra.
