Title: Zeke's "Selective Hearing"
Post by: David C. on June 02, 2007, 05:20:02 PM
With the warmer weather, Zeke likes spending time in the backyard.  Today, he got a little too close to the fence gate and was poking his nose through the mesh as if he wanted to go exploring.   I called him to come back to me.  Zeke looked at me, wagged his tail, and then went right on back to poking his snout through.

I went down the deck and got onto the grass to go collect him.   Before I could, Zora, who was inside, started to bark.   Zeke immediately stopped what he was doing and hauled tail right back inside.   Zeke may be an alpha, but when Zora says "jump", Zeke says "How high?".

A little later, we had a repeat of the same exercise.   Once again, Zeke acknowledged me with a tail wag, but continued doing what Zeke wanted to do.   So I then asked him "Zeke, do you want a TREAT?".   Zeke immediately stopped what he was doing and hauled tail back inside again.

I guess this story should be no surprise to any dachshund owner!

LOL -Penny so has selective hearing. She knows what I want her to do and she will completely ignore me, but hear the cookie jar or any kind of food and she is hauling butt for the kitchen... That's a dachshund for you!!

The word "treat" always gets their attention.  Heck, I think even Boone knows the "t" word, and he really is deaf!

I can see him doing that, being the doxie that he is! I went to a dog show Saturday and was watching the rally obedience ring. This little B/T LH did not want to be there. She finally just sat down and would not budge! The owner was trying to finish by coaxing her (her name was Becky)..."Becky...cookie...treat...food...ice cream" Becky just sat there, just moving her head to see the audience. It was pretty darn funny! Finally, the owner said "OK, lets go" and Becky stood up and followed her owner out of the ring. It was an obedience run that only doxie owners would understand.

No surprise here!  In fact, I had a similar situation with Chilie just last night.  We have an open field that backs up to our back yard, and Chilie was out there exploring.  I must have called her name a dozen times, but Chilie just kept on exploring as if I hadn't said a word.  Finally, I brought out the treat can and shook it while calling Chilie's name.  Boy, did she come running!

TREAT?????  DID SOMEONE SAY TREAT?????  Okay fine.  I'll stop digging a hole in mamas garden if there are really treats.  Hummm...it COULD be a trick.  But maybe it's NOT a trick.  Hummm.....
