Hi All:
We're getting ready to take our first road trip with the girls and was just wondering if anyone who has traveled with their kidz before might have any tips or tricks to share. We'll be traveling for a total of four days; two days up and two days back.
We took the girls to the vet for check-ups and to make sure they were up-to-date on all their shots. Had them both microchipped and got them registered with AVID. Asked the vet about health certificates which he said weren't necessary but will be sure and have his card with us.
We have made reservations at pet-fiiendly hotel and I think I've got everything we'll need: seatbelt harnesses, crates, crate mats, beds, dream sacks, hug-a-dog harnesses with id and flex line leashes, collars with id and license and regular leashes, 25' lead, dual leash, poopie pick-up bags, a critter tote, dog food, bottled water, food/water bowls, treats, meds/tranquilizers, first aid kit, AND toys.
Hope there will be a little room left for our stuff.
If anyone has any input or suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated as this is our maiden voyage. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend. Thank you in advance for any suggestions, or if you can think of anything I may have forgotten.
We travel to my mums about 4 1/2 hours away. We usually break every two hours to let them sniff and offer them water. I also have a lot of old towels at hand as we have a chuck up charlie, to which I add we don't feed them prior to travelling.
Other than lots of blankies to curl up on the back seat thats that.

I give all of the dogs 1 cc of Dynamite DynaPro before we start out and all of them travel in their crates. That seems to work for us.

I have a small x-pen (big enough for all of them though) that I take when I travel. I feel ok about leaving them for short periods of time in the hotel when they are in the x-pen. If a maid comes in (even though I put out the do not disturb sign), they can't escape thru the door. In Texas, when you travel with your dog(s) you have to have their rabies certificates with you even if they are wearing their tags. Some kind of crazy law and if you don't have them with you, the dog(s) can be confiscated and held. Other than that, sounds like you have it covered. Have a great trip! :thumb:
One thing I'd strongly suggest when you bed down in your pet friendly motel/hotel is to bring in a blankie or quilt with their scent for the bed or crate that they'll be sleeping in. We traveled from CA to WA and all went pretty well except my girls wanted to bark at every noise at the motels we stayed in. When I brought in "their" quilt for the bed, that seemed to simmer them down to a low roar. You sound very prepared and I'm sure thngs will turn out just fine. Have a great trip.

is that for motion sickness? or a sedative?
It's a 12 hour trip to see those grandbabies ... Ellie travels quite well. We take half hour rest stops with lots of walking. The only bad experience we had was with a "pet friendly" hotel that didn't have a blade of grass to pee on! They actually directed me to a gas station about 1/2 mile away that had a strip of grass........ grrrrrrrrrr !
:apls: Thank you all so much for your input. Really good ideas, tips, and suggestions that I hadn't thought of! I really appreciate your input so much.
This is the first vacation hubby and I are taking together in eons. Our little boy, who passed away in May, did not do well with traveling or being kenneled so one of us always stayed home with him while the other vacationed. We are just so excited about this trip and while I know there will always be something forgotten or not planned for, we will figure it out and improvise.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend, now back to work! :bolt:
Sounds like you have everything coverd. I take a copy of all vet records with me, I picked this up from rescue and have carried it over to my own. Then if something happens I have it. I have been leaving the tv on in the motels for sound but at home we sleep with a fan so I plan on taking on with me from now on. We are leaving for The Midwest Doxie Fest on Thursday but we are taking the camper this trip. I love the camper for traveling and the dogs are why we bought it. :apls:
