Title: New Addition
Post by: tpoof on May 21, 2007, 04:12:33 PM
Hello All!

Well I guess I should do a short introduction.

Both my wife and I are avid dog lovers and owners, haveing had a English Springer Spaniel  that has passed over the Rainbow Bridge some 8 years ago and now have a 7 yr old female Standard Poodle and as of one week are new owners of an 11 week old Min. Dachshund! male.. Ceasar  :apls:

We were wanting another dog and wanted something small but with a big heart and found that Dachunds have the proper characteristics!
Its been a long time since we were standing outside in the middle of the night wating for a pup to do his buisness.
So far so good,,,
Decided to name the fireball Ceasar to give him a name worthy of his character to come.. :dontknow:

Its good to have a pup in the house once again and are always smiling on the antics of our "lil Ceasar" lol :2funny:
Its quite the sight  watching the wife walking in the morning with the Standard prancing and the little guy running along with ears a flopping wildly, bucking and jumping with abandon...

I hope to share more with you's as time permits..

smitten with Doxies..   :thumb:

Welcome to one of the most informative places about doxies! You will find yourself making lots of friends here and often forget that you haven't met any of them face-to-face. A few of the people on this board have actually met, but not too many.
I have a red smooth mini, Schatzi who a lot of dark coloring in in her, too. Ceasar reminds me a little of her as a pup with the darker coloring around his ears. He looks like he will live up to his name quite well. The ears flopping are always so funny to see.
Schatzi, too, has to live with a Big Dog since we have an English Bulldog. They are best buddies and Schatzi just lets Molly know that SHE is the boss (more like the  :icon_queen: )

Where do you live?  We are in S.C.

Ceaser is adorable!  He looks so small next to the standard.  Welcome to the board too- this board has been a wonderful place for us when Cookie had some health issues.  Everyone is so kind here.
I adopted an older doxie, Cookie, so I love living vicariously through others that have puppies.   Can't wait to hear all of your doxie stories and see more pics as Ceaser grows up.

You are in for the ride of your life. Ceasaris a cutie, so is his big friend. As Teresa said you have come to a wealth of information, love and tactics to get around these pint sized warriors. We also are global, I'm in Australia. Our pair we have at the present are Oliver  a mahogany red mini long hair and Amy  :angel4:  a mini long hair blackand tan.

Ceasar looks very noble in those first two pictures. Fits his name!

I adopted a tiny six-year-old red/dapple smooth doxie a year ago from DRNA that I named Punkin.  I also share my home with Albert the Wonderpug (black pug) who is the same age as Punkin.

Punkin is my first doxie and I've learned a great deal from the folks on this board.

Wow!! Gorgeous puppers!  It looks like all Caesar needs is the olive branch crown to top off his regal bearing.

I am owned by Ozzy, a longhair mini.  His unusual coloring comes from having a standard smooth coated red mother and a miniature longhair black father.  We had to wait for his tail to grow out before we knew whether he would be a shorthair or longhair.  He takes more after his daddy.

Welcome to the board.  I have found many useful tips and suggestions here.

Ohmygoodness! What a cutie Caesar is! I love his big ol' head on his little puppy body!  And I love the picture where it looks like he's taking your poodle for a walk! Too cute!

I'm shamelessly owned by Berman (4-year-old black and tan male) and Lucy (2-year-old red female). We live in Broken Arrow, OK (a suburb of Tulsa).

Wow!  :apls:
It so nice to receive such a warm welcome!
We are looking forward to hearing comments and sharing pictures with you's all!
I think we'll be looking for advise from the "pro's" out there on Doxie training...

Here we are week 1 on housetraining,, its cold and raining,,, and the little gaffer just doesn't want to go outside!
Its hard to keep a proper eye on his every move to try to make the lessons consistant.
He still is a pup and I guess is expected to slip up sometimes....

He sure seems to be a cuddley thing and always wants to be held... could this be a future potential problem?  Not much experience with these small dogs....lol  :dontknow: sure like doing the holding/snuggling though...

Feeding is three times a day,,,1/4 cup per meal,,,water/food withheld after 7pm..

Ceaser also tend to do alot of scratching, looks like dandruff, ??

SO WE WELCOME ANY ADVISE! :help:

Oh yeah,,, the poodles name is Millie,,, age 7 born on the Millenium,,,,hence the name.. lol
she's a good girl

Again thanks for the great welcome.... :hello2:

We'll be talkin.

If you put the pup on about a 6ft lead take him out & stand in the area you want them to go potty in when an adult just stand in one place if you let them go out by themselfs they forget why they are out there. You can let them go all around you when they do their business PRAISE<PRAISE act like it is the greatest thing you ever saw. Also you can tell them hurry up,go potty whatever words you wish to use tell them that each time you take them out.You can also give a treat if you wish but I would not do it everytime the little buggers will sometimes just go out to get a treat. Take them out every 2 hours, after a nap, after eating, playing if they are walking around with their nose to the ground. You have to go with them each time, tell them the majic words it may take 3 months or longer with this breed.(Big Dogs easier to house break) This is the way dog show people train their dogs it really comes in handy after they figure out what you want they will go potty on command which is great when raining, snow or ice or in the middle of the night or on a trip in the car. IF they do not go when you take them in put them in a crate or area that is puppy proof.
Hope this helps
Patches Mom
MY Dogs do go potty on command.

I always say that Dachshunds could be the A.D.D. mascot!!! Because they are hound dogs and love to track a scent, they will go outside to potty, catch a scent of something else, and totally forget what they are supposed to be doing. I have seen Schatzi in the middle of doing her business getting distracted and that was it. She was looking for whatever she thought might have wandered in her yard. We have paper trained her to an area in the house since we are gone most of the day and it works pretty well. She will go outside, also, but is not the most reliable for going outside (unless we have a long, long, time). We are still working on it, and hoping to move later this summer to a place with a fenced in yard where it may be a lot easier to train her for outdoors. If you use puppy pads inside, I have found that the store brand of the Depends underpads are much cheaper, around 6.00 for 18 than the actually puppy training pads and they are also larger.
As for the snuggling and cuddling-thats a doxie trademark. They love to be cuddled and be with their humans. They also love to burrow under blankets and anything else (beware any warm laundry if it is laying around). It doesn't seem to cause a problem and we absolutely love it our house. Schatzi knows their is always a human that will let her cuddle up with them!

Millie is beautiful. I have a friend with a cream standard, Belle, who is around 9 years old. She is a joy to be around and soooo smart.

Thanks Patches Mom! We do much the same and its good to see we are on the right track! 3 months though..
Our dog Millie also will go on command, that is one of the best things you can train a dog to do I think. lol,, very handy

Teresa,,, A.D.D mascot ! lol  I can somehow see how they can get distracted easy,,, its a bigg world out there!
and having hound blood is of no help but I think adds to thier charm,,,
we are certianly enjoying the snuggling trait alot!      Our Millie is a very aloof girl!

Do you do both,, the paper training as well as the outside regiem?
thats a good tip on the depend pads :thumb: appreciated! :thumb:  We may go the route for an option,, not sure yet,,,

Anyway I should have mentioned that our little Ceasar came to us witha problem,   an itching problem..
scratching himself on the inside of hie backlegs mostly,,some little sores..
called the breeder who reccomended a diluted solution of anti dandruff shampoo,,, we tried,,, never helped...? :thinik:
Got some anti-itch wipes from Wally world and used that for a couple of days,,,seemed to help some,, ease the itch but not solve the problem...

After he woke up last night crying and scratching.. this morn I took him to the vet for a checkup! :apls: :ambulance:
The vet gave him a dose of "Revolution" a  topical application and said to keep an eye on him!  we will!
Thinks perhaps Ceasar may have some "bug" causing greif..  hopefully all will be well now! :xfinger:

He also gave Ceasar his 3month shots for rabies parvo,,the works....
It been a big day for the little one and he's one tired puppy!

It is also SNOWING here today,, making teaching a pup even more challenging...
even so,, Ceasar is doing fine and soon hopefully the meds will work and he can enjoy being a puppy!!
I thank you's kindly for the interest and input!

A couple more pics of the dogs.......... :apls: :apls:

Sounds like he might have allergies you can give 1/4 of a benadryl in the morning and see if that helps. Also adding fish oil/salmon oil to his food might help with the itching and will help the coat also. if not you might want to look into another food and see if this helps.

Thanks for the tip on the Benadryl LMG! Will try anything almost to give this fella some peace! Poor itchy lil Ceasar.
The oil supplement is alsop a good idea! Thanks again!

On the side...

Its fun to watch how Ceasar will grap one of Millies toys, making Millie want it so she just goes over to him and takes it away! Ceasar never says a peep, he just goes and gets another toy which he chews with great relish! After a minute or so Millie will want that toy so as she gets up to get it Ceasar calmly goes and gets the first toy he started with! It seems like a plan of his,, he's a smarty!

The ol bait and switch routine! lol Now where did he learn that without TV!  :2funny:

My Buelah has allergies as well.  It started when she was a little girl...probably right about Ceaser's age.  We give her benedryl at the first sign of itching and then get her to the vet if it continues.  The trick is to catch it early before he has breakouts.  I add fish oil to all four of the dogs food so I'm not sure if that helps or not...but it sure does make the coats shiney and healthy!  :)

As he gets older you can up the dose of the benadryl--check with your vet about it. i paid my vet a lot of money to tell me this. :)

When Berman had allergy problems not too long ago (or was it Lucy? - I can't keep track anymore! :idiot:), my vet's office recommended 1 mg for every pound so I think I was giving Berman (or Lucy? :dontknow:) 1/2 a tablet a day.  Each adult tablet contained 25 mg.

Love him!! So handsome!  Millie is a looker too.   Welcome!  I have a miniature Piebald named Porky Pie, who is 6 1/2.   Porky has terrible allergies, so if you ever encounter those issues, I am full of ideas on how to help.   Porky is known as quite the mischievous one around here.  :2funny:

Oh, forgot to mention.  The shampoo we use that has helped the itchy skin in Porky is called MalAcetic Ultra shampoo. It is a medicated shampoo in a white bottle with a black label, that we got from our vet with prescription of how often to bathe, etc...  I'm not sure your little guy is old enough to use it yet, but you could check with your vet if they think its an allergy issue or just dry skin.   Hope this helps a bit.  Also, putting oatmeal (not instant!) in an old sock, then cooking it, and running it under cool water until it reaches a lukewarm temperature, can be used to help the itchy dry skin.  After it has cooled to lukewarm, you can gently use it during bath time to put on the skin. Do not rub just lightly bring the sock across all skin surfaces.  If you rub, it makes the itching worse.   And never do HOT baths in a dog with allergies, keep the water lukewarm.
