On Friday, Merlin got sick. I thought something was off when I called everyone in for their daily meal. Usually, all I have to do is call out "Eaties!" and all four Herd members assume their positions. I have trained everyone to sit/stay until I release all four at once to eat. Merlin jumped up on my bed and curled up into a little ball.
I thought, either he's gotten into some food he wasn't supposed to and he's stuffed, or he's got an upset stomach.
About two hours my daughter Miriam noticed diarrhea in the dining room. When I went over to clean it up I found it was blood tinged and streaked with mucus. By 7 p.m. I was sure it was Merlin with the bloody stool and I took him to the emergency vet. They checked his membranes and temperature and said he looked o.k., but I would have to wait for the vet to get an estimate on the cost of hospitalizing him and giving him I.V. fluids. The last time I had a dog do this, it cost over $600 and he was fine in the end. So I decided to take Merlin home and wait for further symptoms.
When I got home, Miriam and I brainstormed for ways to keep him hydrated, and Miriam came up with the ultimate cure-all - home made, authentic Jewish chicken soup! She got him a bowl of her famous soup, with a few small pieces of parsnip and bits of shredded chicken in it! He slurped down every last drop! By Sunday morning, he was back to normal!
I so glad to hear taht he is doing better and that you were able to keep him hydrated! What a great idea!!
Goodness, Merlin! I thought you may have gotten into something like Berman did last weekend! Glad you are feeling much better - and momma's pocketbook didn't suffer!
Whew - glad he is ok !!! I have used unsalted chicken broth watered down to keep mine hydrated before. Sometimes water won't cut it and something with a little flavor will go down !!! Glad you were able to find something he would slurp !!!!
So glad to hear that it was nothing more serious! Poor baby...glad the soup helped!
When Gizmo was a pup she has Reflux disease she still has it but I use to give her Pedilite the stuff you give to kids with all the minerals in it kept her from having to get IV's at the vet.
Just a thought.
