Last night in chat, I mentioned "Murder Can Depress Your Dachshund", by Selma Eichler (I have read others of her Desiree Shapiro mysteries), and today I picked up "Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund" by Blaize Clement - a new author for me, but a b&t smooth on the cover sure caught my eye! I hope it's a trend - there haven't been dachsies in mysteries for some time - and it's about time to get some!
Cooool! I love mysteries and mysteries with dachshunds in them would be better yet. Thanks for the tip Julia.
I read the one by Blaize Clemont while on the trip to Nashville last weekend. It is really good. Of course, the dachshund on the cover got my attention! I'll have to look for the one by Selma Eichler. Actually I'm going online to the library right now to see if they have it!
I love mysteries and will check these out - thanks !!!! Do you find them in the mystery section or the animal section?
Other Dachsie mysteries
The Maxie and Stretch series by Sue Henry. This is a fairly new series, with only two titles so far, The Serpent's Trail and The Tooth of Time. The third title, The Refuge, will be released August of this year.
The Melanie Travis seris by Laurien Berenson is about a standard poodle breeder, but each book usuall features a mystery involving another breed. Hot Dog features a dachshund.
The Long Good Boy by Carol Lea Benjamin is the sixth book in the Rachel Alexander and Dash series. The dog on the cover is cute, the book is not. It's a good mystery, but dark, seedy, ugly and depressing.
Anyone know of any other dachshunds mysteries?
Julia, I am SO glad you posted this! I was trying really hard today to remember the title of that book and just couldn't. I can't wait to read both of those.
No problem, Beth! Jeri - good to know about the Sue Henry series! :thumb: Barb - Barnes & Noble has them in mystery, as does Borders. :apls:
On a related theme (dog mysteries), Virginia Lanier, who no longer writes, if Auntydoxzz is correct, has a wonderful series about bloodhounds - Blind Bloodhound Justice, A Brace of Bloodhounds, The House on Bloodhound Lane, and Ten Little Bloodhounds. Then there's Susan Conant with her Malamutes - A New Leash on Death, Dead and Doggone,A Bite of Death, Paws Before Dying, and at least a dozen more, and then to be fair, there's Lilian Jackson Braun and her "The Cat Who" series - about two Siamese - Koko and Yum Yum, and don't forget Rita Mae Brown and her cat, Sneaky Pie - who "write" together - all mysteries. There's another good one I read, thanks to Auntydoxzz about a Welsh corgi and a virulent new strain of rabies (don't panic, DD!), but I don't recall the name and can't find my copy - darn! (Have I mentioned lately that my license plate says "BOOK RDR"?) :2funny:
Julia
I think the book you are talking about is by Rita Mae Brown. Its called Whisker of Evil. She not only has Mrs Murphy the Cat but Tee Tucker the Corgi. If I am right and did this right, I might have a link to a page with description.

There is a new paperback by her too. It is called Sour Puss.

Here are a couple more books etc.
For those who will read Cat books, there are all the Cat Who books. There is also a series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. There are a whole series of these. These are somewhat different because the cats do talk!! They spy and help solve the mysteries!! One of the books is Cat Breaking Free: A Joe Grey Mystery (Joe Grey Mysteries).
As far as Virginia Lanier there is a more recent story by her I think. It is part of a book called Bark M For Murder (Mass Market Paperback)by J. A. Jance (Author), Virginia Lanier (Author), Lee Charles Kelley (Author) . There is also a story by Chassie West in the book. If you go to Amazon's page and check out the reviews, you will also see a "review" posted by Lee Charles Kelley. Let's just say he is different! A look at the review will give you a pretty good idea of what his books tend to be like.
I also just got a book called Murder Unleashed. It is by Elaine Viets. Its one of her Dead End Job mysteries. The job in question is with a Pet boutique.
There is also a series called (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries) by Cynthia Baxter. I think the one called Putting on the Dog is about a dog show.

THAT WAS THE MYSTERY BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY THAT BEAU SHREDDED!! I HAD TO PIECE TOGETHER THE LAST 40 OR SO PAGES SENTENCE BY SENTENCE TO FIGURE OUT WHO DUNNIT!!
So either it was so good Dr. Beau Leaky couldn't put it down, or he hated the ending so much he tried to obliterate it! I ended up paying $18 for the library's paperback! It was good, but not THAT good!
Karen
Actually Karen he might have read an earlier book by her!!
I cant remember the title but a previous book by her DID have a doxie in it and get this______________
the doxies place in that book was shredding the vital clue!!! I will have to check and see if I can find the name of that book!!
I remember its the ONLY one I have bought in HC and did that because after several postings on the newsgroup, I had commented about liking her books, and she responded to me. I told her then she really needed to write one with a doxie in it, and she mentioned that the next book out would have a doxie with a vital(although quite small) part in the book!!

Jeri - check wherever you buy your books- I just got "The Refuge" yesterday... and if anyone likes archeological mysteries, there are the ones by Lyn Hamilton about her character, Lara McClintoch - the newest is The Chinese Alchemist. Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series are mystery/horror if you like that genre, btw.
What began my revived interest in mysteries about 11 years ago, was Carolyn Hart's "Death on Demand" series. This is led by Annie and Max Darling - she owns a mystery bookstore and her husband, Max, is wealthy and dabbles in detective work. Each book has an art contest where there are 5 paintings - described- and during the course of the story, you not only have Annie's mystery to solve, but also can figure out which 5 mystery novels are depicted in those paintings. One of her characters wins a book for figuring out all 5 books from the paintings. She also has a Henry O series.
I started The Serpent's Trail and now can't put it down. I just went back and picked up The Tooth of Time and have The Refuge being transferred to the library near me. I'm hooked for sure. I had tried Sue Henry's early Alaska mysteries and just couldn't get into them, but I love the Maxie and Stretch ones and even picked up one of her Jessie Arnold mysteries, also. Thanks for the leads on the good books. I've already finished several of the others.
LOL - I read all three of the Maxie & Stretch books now in less than 3 days, and am ready to start the Elaine Viets...
I enjoyed the one I read by Elaine Viets and the one by Cynthia Baxter, but not as much as the Maxie and Stretch ones. I love the way Sue Henry has the dachschund characteristics portrayed so perfectly. I haven't looked at her biography too closely, but she has to own a doxie to know them that well! Now my only problem is getting anything else done around the house!
Julia, when does school finish up for you?
She has a neighbor with a dachsie! On the back flap of the hardcover "The Refuge" it shows her with the black and tan longhair. The dachsie is in her neighbor's "minnie Winnie"! Sue lives in Anchorage, and teaches writing at the University of Alaska.
I'm done! Thursday was my last day with children and yesterday was my checkout day - all posters, calendars, nptes, alphabet strips, etc, have to be tossed or put away, boom boxes stored, computers wrapped to prevent extra dust over the summer, desks cleaned ooff and cleaned out (I use shaving cream - we let it set for about 20 seconds and then they get to play in it until it is no longer white and foamy, plus, it removes the tape residue from their nametags better than anything I've ever used!), and all bookcases taped up with paper to prevent extra dustiness. Yesterday was our end of school luncheon. Last year I got a red, wooden apple for 20 years in my district, and I received a lapel pin yesterday for those years plus this one.
I'm sure you are thrilled to be done! Our schools here finished this week also and the teachers were done on Friday. I noticed on the flap of the "Tooth" book it showed a picture of Sue Henry with a short-hair dachshund leaning out the window of a "minnie-winnie" giving her kisses! I've now finished two books (and accomplished nothing else this weekend) and should have the third waiting on me at the library tomorrow or Tuesday . They are wonderful!
Ah ha! I found it - the one with the Welsh corgi and the virulent rabies (again, DD- not to worry!) is called, A Feral Darkness by Doranna Durgin - a little more scifi than some might like, though. I can also recommend the Katie Fforde books - I have Second Thyme Around, the Susan Wittig ALbert books - I have Lavender Lies, and I have a series by identical twins about identical twins - the authors are Barbara Taylor McCafferty and Beverly Taylor Herald. Their Nan and Bert series includes Double Cross, Double Murder, Double Exposure, and Double Date. If you like cooking mysteries, check out Tamar Myers and Dianne Mott Davidson.
I had not yet read Murder can depress your dachsund, Duplicity dogged the dachshund, or The Refuge. I checked with my local library, and each one of the three dachsie mysteries that I wanted were checked out! I will be on vacation in just over three weeks, so with luck, one or more of them will be available for that long car ride (two days each way!) The good news, of course, is that they are all in the library collection!
