Saturday, my church had its annual Spring craft and bake sale. I worked in the kitchen, helping to prepare three genuine home-made soups (chili, chicken noodle, and potato bacon chowder). I helped serve the soup, and I swear I felt like it was a holy moment when I handed the soup out to people. It didn't matter if I knew the person or not, there was something about feeding someone else that made the whole morning turn into something special.
Yesterday, I learned why. The Gospel reading was that of Jesus' third appearance to the disciples after the resurrection, where he asked Peter three times if he loved him. Peter said that he did, and Jesus replied, "Feed my sheep." Pretty cool, at least to me.
We had a special litany service in rememberance of the Virginia Tech tragedy. I did not know this was going to be part of the service, which I picked out my music for the offertory. The litany was held right before the offertory, and was a very sobering part of the worship service. I then performed the offertory music, "Trumpet Tune," better known as the Theme for Masterpiece Theater. I got so many compliments from people in the congregation, almost all said that while it was important to spend a moment of sorrow, the offertory served to pick everyone up.
It's nice to know that, sometimes, I do get something right.
OK, now for the funny spot of the weekend. A young man came in and got a bowl of soup. He was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, and had a scruffy short beard. He ate his soup, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and said, to no one in particular, "That was some GOOOOOD soup. Someone in the kitchen has their SH@T together."
It's good to know your efforts were appreciated! I bet he remembers that soup for a while.
Sounds like a very good day!
Can you share the Bacon Potato soup recipe?
Sounds like a yummy weekend! I am stuffed after coming back from the buffet, and now I want some of that soup!
I know what you mean abut service. I always volunteer for our parish festival, and I look forward to serving every year.
I'll try to get the recipe from the chief cook this coming Sunday. I know she had it written down in a notebook, but didn't think at the time to copy it down.
