Title: surgery!
Post by: scootersmom on April 13, 2007, 10:25:16 AM
Recent phone conversation with my tax-preparing professional (i.e. “Mom”) confirms that my tax return money will just cover Scooter’s vet bill.  Huzzah!

Yes, my dear little wiener dog is currently, right now, UNDER THE KNIFE.  Well, not so much “knife” as “cryo-eyelid-freezing-thingy”.  The vet is removing a little tumor that developed there, as well as cleaning his teeth (which are horrible, no matter how hard I try and keep up with them, and Scooter will confirm that I brush his teeth WAY too much for his liking).  They’re also giving him a booster vaccine to help prevent dangerous/deadly infections because of his poor dental health.  This will make him one sore pup when he comes home to me this afternoon.

I have a box of pre-cooked bacon at home already, in preparation for the gratuitous amount of guilt-induced spoiling he’s going to receive.  Plus, he will have to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for a few days and those are pills and giving dogs pills requires MEAT, right?  Lots and lots of meat.  Also maybe cheese.

I took him in this morning before work, and he was not at all happy with me.  Much pacing and whining and shedding and when the vet picked him up to carry him out he gave me " oy - such a look.  A look that said, “MOMMY WHY YOU LET VET TAKE ME AWAY? WHAT I DO WRONG?  MOMMY?”  Or, more likely, “PERHAPS I WILL PEE ON VET AND NICE WHITE COAT. THEN MOMMY SORRY.”

*facepalm*

Anyway, I get to ring them up in an hour or so to check up on him.  I hope he’s OK.  And that, eventually (and with enough groveling on my part, and believe me, I will have to grovel, because I’m going to be spending the evening with a small brown bundle of resentment) he will forgive me.

Silly little dog.  ♥

Sending rays for Scooter (and also for your guilt ).  This quite a change from those first days of Scooterdom...

Ohhh poor Scootie and poor Mommy too! I have to admit though I was relieved to read that it wasn't the dreaded "dachshund" surgery...he'll be better in no time, until he realizes mommy guilt = meat and cheese, then his recovery may backslide sharply for a while. It will be nice to have those pearly whites, after reading this I am heading to get Hallie's toothbrush I am a little behind on that. I did her nails yesterday so told her we could put off the toothbrushing/scraping til today.

Get well soon Scooter and milk it good!
Title: update
Post by: scootersmom on April 13, 2007, 12:58:18 PM
I just got off the phone with the vet...Scooter is doing OK, although they had to put stitches in his eyelid (ew) and now he gets to wear a spiffy plastic cone (e-collar) on his head for 10 days.  AND have ointment put into his eyeball every day.  Which will no doubt make him very "happy".

Perhaps I need to buy a few steaks to supplement the bacon.  I think I'm going to be in trouble for a while for this one.

The news on his teeth...the vet said it was a "miracle" that he didn't have to pull about 12 of them, and that it's inevitable that they'll be lost, it's only a matter of time.  He did say that it was good that I do what I do to try and keep his mouth healthy, but that Scooter is probably just predisposed to gum disease.  Poor little noodle.

Egad, what does one do with an e-collared dog?  I feel like I should keep my eye on him 24-7 so he won't be bonking into things...

Having borne the guilt of turning a resentful dachshund over to a vet to be carved upon, I understand your situation. Excessive spoilage is the only remedy. And the collar will only make you feel more guilty. I'll bet Scooter is a real character, we met him at the midwest dachsiefest the weekend you got him and we could tell he had the makings of a fine person-owner.

Bad teeth - we could write a book.  Both of ours have a few pulled every second or third year. Our vet says that its a genetic trait she sees in dachshunds and some other small breeds.  It seems if you have one with this characteristic, no matter how much you brush, you can't seem to stop it.

Thanks, Rich - it's tremendously good to know that it can happen to any of our beloved furkids and it's not just me being incapable of properly brushing my dog's teeth, etc.

How do your pups do with food?  Can they still do kibble?  Does Scooter have a life of canned food ahead of him?  (he might actually be happy about that)

I'm getting ahead of myself.  The vet said he probably will have a couple more years with his teeth.  And I knew this was coming.  It just didn't really seem like a reality until now.

I'm planning a trip to the Omaha Steak outlet on the way to pick Scooter up because I have a LOT of atonement to do.  No one can do a "WOE IS ME" look like a Dachsie, can they?

Is this the Scooter of Noel & Scooter?
Anyway, sounds like Scooter had quite a day.  I'm glad things went well.  I imgaine poor Scooter is going to have one sore head for a few days.  That collar has got to be a pain, too.  Let us know how things go.  I think the steak and bacon are a good thing.

Hey, this IS the Noel I met at DD's, isn't it???  I just saw the "chicklet" in your email address.  How ya been???  I still have the Christmas picture of you and Scooter, with him looking none too pleased, showing his pearly whites!  LOL!!!  I love that picture!

Poor dear Scooter.  You're gonna have some 'splainin' to do, Mommy.  The eye salve thing is real "fun".  Dolly had to have her eyes worked on at one point and that called for drops 4 times a day AND the salve.  She was NOT a happy pupper.  And the lampshade thingy, oy.  Let's just say, we made it through but it wasn't a picnic.

Here's healing sunshine rays to Scootman.  I'm glad you're popping in more with news on the Scooter pie.

Oh, poor Scooter... surgery is no fun.  You sound like he has you trained well- those looks must be pretty powerful to get you to buy all that steak for him.

Did you know that Nutro makes doggie dessert?  http://www.nutroproducts.com/nchd-pc.asp   My friend's dog Charlie gave Cookie some for a Christmas present, and she got to eat those after her back surgery.  She sure seemed to get her energy back when she smelled them. LOL

Scooter can have steak and dessert!  Hey- that sounds better tahn MY dinner.  :2funny:

Scooter does look a little woebegone in that photo.  Poor guy!  Looks like he has lost weight, and his coat is beautiful.  How long have you had Scooter now?

It's been...wow...nearly 6 years now?

He has been giving me that look all day.  Even worse when his Grandma came over and spoiled him a bit.  He sat in her lap and got belly rubs and gave me a wicked stinkeye for a couple hours.

I'm just happy his appetite seems to have returned.  He had some macaroni and cheese and some chicken for lunch today.  Hasn't had much to drink, though.  Silly dog.

Sounds like he is doing good !!!  He is still  a cutie pie even in his cone !!!!   Rudy and Brandy think the Scootman should have some nice scrambled eggies with some cheese sprinkled on tip.....and lots of belly rubs too !!!

Smoochies Scooter..... :comfort:

Guinness here - that cone is a real pain!

A few years ago, when I was young and foolish, I tried to go up the stairs to the second floor with a cone on.  Being a long-bodied dog I jumped for the next step, caught the cone on the edge of the stair, and catapulted myself backwards back down the stairs.

Nothing hurt, but my self-respect.  Mom nearly piddled herself, it was so funny!  (Glad SOMEONE enjoyed the moment!).

Karen Here - really, I started to panic when I saw him fall, then couldn't catch him, so I knew he was o.k.  And it really was EXTREMELY funny!  He just ran off as if he meant to do it! :2funny:

Wow - he really has mastered that "Mommy be sorry" face!  I'd give into a lot of guilt and spoil him even more, too!   :headbang: Scooter!
