Title: Dr. Leaky is down in his back!
Post by: Doxherding Karen on April 07, 2007, 09:09:56 PM
Beau, that ever-lovin' chewer of mine, has gone down in his back again!  Before I adopted him last October, he suffered a back problem that gradually improved with crate rest.  He had been doing really well and of course won't listen when he's told not to jump off the big bed.  The other day he jumped off and landed on his side.  I don't know if that fall caused an injury or if an injury caused the fall, but now he's definitely on the disabled list.

He's moving a little, but I'm not letting him out of my sight.  So it's back to the crate for dear Dr. Leaky, who deserves some rays and an Oscar nomination for Da L@@k!

Yikes!  Poor Beau!
The first time Cookie's back bothered her, she went on medicine (cortisone?) and it got better on its own.  Hopefully you can get him to a vet Monday and they can presecribe something for him.

Don't you just love how these things always seem to happen on holiday weekends?

I will send out all the rays I can for a speedy recovery!

Sounds like the Doc need a Doc.  I'm so sad to hear this.  Sending loads of rays to our favorite wise Doctor L., chewer of fabulous literature and chomper of the finest leather.  It's off to your crate, dear boy.  Listen to your mother now and obey.

You might want to start adding vit. Ester-C and glucosamine/chondroitine to his diet. Start by adding small amounts then increase the supplements.  Start with 250 mg then go to 500 of Ester-C the same on glucosamine/chondroitine, 4-6 weeks of crate rest is usualy recommented. You might also want to check out dodgerslist.

If possible could you get a ramp for him,  or get one made,  if he has had a bad back,  he shouldn't be doing much jumping-which I know is hard. When you go somewhere I would crate him,  or confine him to a small space with a baby gate.

The dear doctor HAS a custom made ramp outside and special stairs to da bed, he just prefers to take the fastest route to join in all the yippin' an' yappin'!  COWABUNGA!!!!!

Grrrrrr. . . . :BangHead:

Oh, poor baby.  I hope a vet visit is scheduled, he might need some drugs, and much crate rest.  Get well soon Dr. Leaky.

Oh no I just hate to read when another one of our babies are hit by this awful thing. Poor guy I hope he recovers quickly! I know it's no fun for either of you!! I wish the crate time didn't have to be so long to heal a back up, it's essential of course but wouldn't it be nice if it were 2-3 days instead of weeks!

Give him a hug for us and be tough...don't let him out too soon no matter what he tells you! :) And I agree, no more jumping off the bed that will spell disaster...I am one of the few here I think that am very opposed to ramps, as you said with Dr Beau Leaky (dang I love that name!!) they can easily choose to bypass the ramp and just jump off, and just one time of that is one too many. (I have a ramp down her stairs out the back door but it is wide and gradual and has 4 ft sides so she can't jump off the edge) I have taught Hallie (who used to be a real mt goat when I first got her) not to jump on the furniture on her own and she never does now, she waits for me to put her on and off, (I also taught her to stay once up on something although I never leave her up on anything unsupervised but I do trust her not to jump off our bed even when someone knocks on the door now) I do put an x pen across the sofa the rare time when I leave her home alone, I don't think she'd jump on it but just to be extra sure.

Heal up quickly Dr. Beau L we hope you feel better real soon!

Karen, we have a ramp to the bed and placed it at the bottom ......all round the side of the bed we have placed baby bed guard rails that just slip inbetween the mattresses....THEY WORK WONDERFULLY and force my babies to use their ramp at the bottom....and we also use them to block off a chair or two....fit just right underneath the cushion of the chair.  It may look a little silly but "what the heck!"...lol.... :thumb:

THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!  Thanks to everyone!  Dr. L. is feeling much better, just enough to start thinkin' about jumpin again!  O.K., he's not the brightest penny in the purse, but he IS one of the cutest!

I'm off to find baby guard rails! :thumb:
