Title: What's a pomotion? Is it good?
Post by: doxielady5569128 on April 04, 2007, 05:18:19 PM
Porky Pie here:  I'm feewing better no more tummy aches for me.  Momma is happy today.  Somefing about a pomotion at work?  What in da world is dat?   I guess its good cause she happy, but my dad seys she needs more pay if da job wants her to do more sponsibilities.    :dontknow:  So...I'm confused.   Here's momma's side of da stowy.

Hi everyone!   I got to work today and my boss asked to speak to m in the back room.   :doah:  I immediately assumed I was in trouble.     THen she said, "I've been meaning to talk to you about something very important."  Red Flags popped up everywhere in my mind!!!   Then she said, "Would you be interested in taking over our author contact poisition as well as your sales position?"    :dontknow:  That's definately not what i was expecting to hear.  I said I could probably do it and would consider it.   Basically, I would be in charge or contacting authors and setting up book signings for our store.    :headbang:

I have always dreamed of beign able to do that part of working in the store.  One problem:   I'm really shy when it comes to stuff like that.  :idiot:  Also, I'm not sure whether I am getting more pay, (raise) or just the added responsibilities.  I think I'll say yes  though.

Also to top off my day, a regular customer refused to be helped by my boss and insisted that ONLY I could help him find the perfect book.    :apls:  After he made his purchase he bought 2 chocolates also and handed me one.  A promotion AND chocolate in one day, doesn't get any better than this!!  :2funny:

What great news! I agree with you, I think I would take the position. Even if the pay doesn't increase right away, you can start the job now, and then once you are comfortable with it, then remind your boss that your responsibilities have increased and you feel your compensation should also. Just the vote of confidence may be enough for the moment, at least if you are like me. Doing author contacts sounds like great fun. I know you were thrilled when the customer only wanted you. I often feel that way when my patients prefer me over the other hygienists. We all have our favorite patients and many of the patients have their favorite hygienists. It's great when we both prefer each other!
The chocolate today was definitely the thing to top it all off!

Thanks for the congratulations! I am really happy about it.   My husband does have a point about the pay though.  I honestly, could get paid better working at McDonald's.   :dontknow:

I do like the idea of just waiting a few months and then I can point out all my assets to the company.  Although, i may have  basis to ask now.  I was orginally hired on as Christmas help.  Then asked to stay because of another employee quitting.   I agreed to stay longer without complaints.   Then, another employee quit in January forcing me to take on more hours, which I again accepted without complaint.   I have always been willing to come in extra days and come in early when needed.  There one was Saturday, I worked 12 hours!!  Because another employee was ill and the bosses daughter was having a birthday, so I worked longer so she wouldn't miss her birthday.

What do you think?  Should I ask for the raise now, or wait?   I'm really unsure about it.  Because if I do not get the raise, I do not think I can afford to stay here.  I have another job offer which would pay more, so I've got some tough decisions to make over the next few days.

In terms of thinking of Porky only, I would love to take the other job with more pay just to be able to buy him more treats and have weekends with him!

What if you tell your boss you would really be interested in the position, but you were wondering if the extra responsibilities would bring a pay increase. Remind her, gently, that you have always been willing to work any extra hours that she has needed you and that you also appreciate the opportunity to get the extra hours. Another idea would be to give it a week or two, instead of a month, and see how it goes and then ask. That way you may not be risking the other job getting away from you.

Karen here - one thing my mother learned a very long time ago was you make the deal when you walk in the door.  Time has proven her right.  Ask your boss to go over with you your responsibilities and to discuss the increase in pay that should accompany it.  Let her take the initiative to say, "no additional pay" or "let's wait and see how it goes."  You can suggest a probationary period of 90 days to reevaluate and increase pay.

Good luck! :thumb:

That's WONDERFUL!  I hope it's all that you dreamed it would be.  I think it's important to know what's what right from the beginning.  Maybe when you sit down to discuss your acceptance of the position, you can go over your new duties and then mention how extended they seem to be and then respectfully ask if there is compensation for these new extended tasks.  Good to get it all done up front so there is no mis-understanding and resentment later.

Well, I made a decision. Finally.  LOL  Thanks for all your helpful advice and ideas!!    :apls:  I decided i am going to ask my supervisor for a raise stating, rising gas prices and added responsibilities, as well as my performance as reasons qualifying me for a raise.  Was wanting to do it today, but her son was ill so she wasn't in.    :doah:  If she is unable to provide me with a raise in the near future I will most likely quit working here and take the better paying offer I have received.

I was doing some serious thinking about it and the thing i would miss the most is my favorite customers.  i would still see many of them at my new job and when I come shopping in the mall.  So, i think the switch might be worth it.  I am also trying for a part time position at Curves which would be GREAT!   The hours at Curves would fit so well with my schedule I have right now and I could still work at the bookstore in the evenings.   Thus, I would make more money without having to leave my customers.  That would be the best solution of all!!   :hello2:  I'll keep you all posted.

Porky Pie here:   Man... all dis job stuff is making me confused.  I just hope I gets more tweats and time wif momma outta dis deal!   Den I'm happy.    :meme:
