It has become a scary thing to give our dogs a meal. I have considered cooking for Hallie just until this all blows over. Are they sure it is only foods with wheat gluten? Scary darn stuff.
It is very scary - makes you afraid to feed anything. I heard it may be the hard food now....but haven't seen anything advertised.....
Last night on CNN Anderson Cooper 360 had someone on who said that the dry food was a dry cat food, Hill's Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet. Hope that helps.
I feed Canidae All Life Stages do not think it has any wheat anything in it will have to look on the bag no wheat, corn or fillers that is what I thought.May cost a little more but you feed less of it have not had to worry about feeding my Fur Kids something that may harm them so far plus they get a little human crumbles of Hamburger,Ground Turkey,Turkey Sauage,Chicken Livers,Liver & Chicken just a couple of smells of the human foods.

The two foods I feed don't have wheat gluten in them either, lets hope they don't discover the problem in another ingredient! I'd cook for her if I thought it would be safer (me in the kitchen is rarely a safe thing lol) but it could happen to just about anything, like the spinach recall we went through. I hope they figure out just what did happen with the current issues and dont add anymore to the list. I heard the same thing about the cat food. :doah:
This is truly terrifying! I will be cooking for my Porky Pie and our cat Peter until all this is taken care of. I really don't know how I'll find the time, but I'd rather my precious babies are safe. At least if I cook it I know that the ingredients are safe. I cannot believe there hasn't been more advertising about this new discovery! If you find out what new foods are on the list, please let me know. I am working all day today so will have no access to the news. Thanks!

It looks like all the canned foods were manufactured in February of this year.
Alpo dry food was mentioned on the 5:00pm News here it is not on the list??? I guess they added it because you can make gravey out of it if you add water? or is that Gravey Train???Do know for sure they said Alpo was in the foods with the plastic in it hubby was watching also. He said Alpo goes thru 17 factories to me that does not make since.

I'm sure everyone wonders as they're making their pet's meals. I've been thinking about giving mine ground turkey and green beans. My dog food doesn't have gluten in it either, but they keep adding to this list. The one thing all these foods have in common, though, is the wheat gluten. So maybe we are OK? Who knows!
I feel the same way Delia, who knows when our food could be on the list too, what if they find another ingredient with problems. I too though am wondering if we are OK since there is no wheat gluten in the food but I guess no one really knows for sure yet. I have considered cooking for Hallie too (we gots LOTS of fish LOL). I was going to get a recipe from the UC Davis site
https://secure.balanceit.com/_client/index.php
(Jennifer is doing this for her 2) but it scared me to read all their facts, that a dog food has to be balanced pretty much exactly or they can develope deficiencies over time. This is from their site.
I have been feeding a homemade diet for years to my pet without giving them any vitamins and minerals and he/she doesn't seem to have any problems. Why should I start using Balance ITĀ® supplements?
Most likely your pet has been conserving essential nutrients as much as possible over the years, but there may already be problems that have developed. Thinning of the bones or osteopenia can occur and can be difficult to notice, unless you see your veterinarian and they take an x-ray or radiograph, or worse your pet breaks a bone. Other nutrient deficiencies are much harder to test for and typically won't show up on routine blood work and won't be obvious until a severe problem develops. The typical way potential deficiencies are evaluated for is by analyzing the pet's diet which can be performed by using the professional version of BalanceITĀ® available to veterinarians. Surprisingly many diets that "seem" alright are grossly deficient in numerous essential vitamins and minerals.
The drawbacks include:
-the increased time for diet preparation,
-potentially an increased cost depending on the ingredients used,
-and the increased risk of your pet developing a deficiency if the recipe is not followed precisely.
Some commercial foods have also undergone Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) feeding trials that help to ensure that the nutrients in the food are bioavailable and that the animal remains healthy while fed the food. Because of the nature of homemade pet foods, they cannot undergo these types of feeding trials; therefore, the fact that they have not undergone animal testing is sometimes seen by some as an additional drawback.
(This one isn't good for those of us trying to keep our kids trim!)
My pet is overweight/obese. Can I make a homemade recipe for them?
No. Overweight and obese pet's should be placed on a weight loss plan by a veterinarian after any underlying disease(s) has been ruled out using a commercial food designed for weight loss. Homemade pet food is typically just too palatable and digestible to be used easily during active weight loss.
and interesting enough, even though they developed these recipes, they don't really recommend home cooking for your dog (they also said they never recommend feeding raw, surprisingly!)
I feed commercial pet food. Should I feed a homemade diet?
Generally the answer is no. Most commercial pet foods are inexpensive, fast and some have undergone years of animal testing. (See Help section - What are the benefits and drawbacks of making homemade pet food?) However, if you prefer to make homemade food for your pet, we believe we provide the best option short of dealing with one of the handful of veterinary nutritionists who will create a homemade recipe for generally between $140 to $250 per recipe.
It sounds like making your own food for them is fairly complicated to keep all the ratios and what not right. I might do this for a while though until the commercial food problem gets sorted out. Me + kitchen might be a more dangerous mix than the commercial food though! I am also wondering about the green beans I add to her meals if that is throwing the balance off. :dontknow:
I've still been a bit concern regarding the dry Iams Lamb and Rice formula, however, I did find the ingredients listed on the website of which does not state wheat gluten. That made me feel a bit better.
I agree it is scary. I dilligently checked Porky's food over and over to make sure it didn't contain wheat gluten. Thankfully, his food didn't. All of this is just making me parnoid.
