Title: Goat dog stikes again!
Post by: April on September 02, 2005, 07:57:21 AM
I would dearly love to know what goes through her little head sometimes.  She got into several of Elf's dirty diapers yesterday and I had to vacuum the entire livingroom to get up the pieces.  It honestly didn't look like she'd eaten much if any of the material though so I just watched her.  She didn't get dinner as I was afraid it might not be a good thing for her since she also ate a whole bag of dried strawberries and bananas (Elf's snacks).  Early this morning she decided to throw up in the big bed so I got to see what she'd eaten.  After I cleaned it up she curled up against me and even let Elf pet her (a rarity to be sure).  This morning I scooped her pottybox since it was full of poop (all from last night), and one of the poos was runny and had blood in it.  I honestly don't know what I can do to help the goat since she seems determined to undermine my best efforts to keep her on the elimination diet so we can determine her allergies.

Anyone have any ideas?  I have a gate, I try to keep anything in bags out of her reach (plastic bags are a challenge to her authority I suppose), and make sure I don't leave things where it seems she can get them.

April, I am sorry that you're having such a hard time with Cajsa.  From what you described, it sounds like she is doing this when you are home with her.  You may not want to do it, but you may have to resort to crating her for a while if the situation does not get better.  In a few of your posts you have eluded to the fact that Cajsa does not really get along with Elf.  Do you think she's doing all this as a sort of acting out...to get more attention?  You must be frustrated beyond belief.   :BangHead:  I can understand that!  We try so hard to make sure our doglets are protected and well taken care of, and it seems like they do the bad stuff anyway just to spite us!  Like little kids, they are.  Hugs to you.  I hope things with Cajsa get better.

Well, she and Elf get along pretty well, it's just Cajsa doesn't always like to be chased and "loved" by Elf.  Elf is still learning "easy touches" so on occasion she will be rougher than she should (not enough to hurt though we make sure of that).  As a result Cajsa tends to avoid being petted by Elf except when she really wants attention (like when she doesn't feel well).

Cajsa always does this stuff when I'm not around.  If I'm in the room or she can see me then it's like it doesn't enter her brain to do it.  I don't know how to dachie-proof things anymore than I have already.  I'm starting to think that the food isn't giving her all the stuff she needs and she's missing her special treats and such since all we've been able to give her is her dogfood.

My dachshunds are "goat" dogs too!  It is a constant battle to keep them out of things!  I bought a garbage can with locking lid for the kitchen, I keep the bathroom door closed, they seem to want to chew up and eat sanitary napkins!  George got really sick 6 month's ago from eating those.  He made 2 trips to the emergency vet, throwing up and bloody stools!  I have signs up in kitchen to take bones directly outside to cans in the driveway out of their reach!  I keep zip-locks and posted signs in all our bathrooms to have sanitary napkins thrown in and taken directly outside to cans out of reach!  I have 5 kids and didn't have this much trouble keeping up with them, when they were little!  My big dogs got into stuff and sometimes still do, but they are bigger and better able to handle chewed up and swallowed stuff.....  The vet says the little guys can't handle things like the big dogs can.  I have a collection of branches, sticks and other goodies they bring in the dog door, sitting on top of the TV.  We take it out to the trash can's everyday!  LOL   :verdict: :verdict: :verdict: :BangHead: :BangHead: :cussing: :cussing:
They hunt and eat bugs by the dozen!  Try buying one of those diaper gennies, that you feed the diaper down into and keep it up out of reach and empty often.  Take garbage out several times a day and just try to watch her.  It sounds like you are doing what you can.....  Can she have chews to keep her busy?  Or because of allergies can't she have those?   Also try rinsing the solid waste in the diapers into the commode before putting them in diaper gennie!  I did that when mine were small and the dogs I had then stopped finding them so tasty!
Diaper fillings and sanitary napkin fillings, can stop up and block the intestine and the chemicals in them are bad.  If she isn't better quickly, call the vet!   We just watch them, try to remove all the hazards we see and pray!  I am so sorry she is giving you such a fit!  Good luck and rays from us to you!

I actually have a diaper genie.  There were evidently two diapers that didn't get put into it though and those were the ones she got.  I already keep the garbage out of the kitchen and in the bathroom with the doors closed (I make double sure of that since the chicken bones a few days ago) and she only has access to the kitchen and occasionally the livingroom if I don't gate her in the kitchen.

I can't leave chews (like rawhide bones) down for her because of the allergy thing.  There are a few chew toys that I can leave down and do, but she doesn't seem interested in those until I get home and she can chew them in my lap!  I'm gettig to my wits end with it because I really don't know what else to do.  I'm gone too long during the day to crate her (usually about 9 hours).  Thanks for the suggestions.

Well that makes sense about being "loved" by Elf.  I think we'll be at that stage soon!  Lara is just fascinated with Chilie, and Chilie tolerates when Lara touches her or grabs her ear.  Just yesterday, Lara put her hand on the scruff of Chilie's neck and then squeazed!  It didn't hurt Chilie, but she turned around and gave a look like, "Hey, that's not comfortable!"  It's fun to watch the two of them together.  Chilie is always trying to sneak in licks on Lara's face.  She's all about licking her hands and feet.

You're probably right about Cajsa not getting all she needs from the diet.  Even though you know it's what's best for her right now to determine what is causing her tummy problems, she doesn't know that.  She just knows that all the stuff she used to eat she isn't getting anymore.  Cajsa probably knows better than to do any of that stuff when you're around.  I don't know how you correct that sort of behavior either.  Chilie does things she's not supposed to when we're not home, but wouldn't dream of it when we are!

Gosh, April, I am sorry.....she is a pistol....all you can do is your best as you are!  How old is she?  Maybe she'll outgrow some of this.  As my dogs get older and did get older with past pets the "goat" thing got few and far between.   Maybe she is just bored!  Manybe a dog walker in mid day would help.  Mine have the other dogs for company and can freely go in and out the dog door, which keeps down boredom and I am in and out all day!  And they still get into things!   :verdict: :BangHead:
We send our best wishes, please know you are doing what you can and that's all you can do, plus pray!!!!

Cajsa will give kisses to Elf especially when we first get home for the day.  It's like she's missed us all - even Elf so she races in and gives a good licking then races away before getting it reciprocated! lol  They really are funny and they are playing "tug" with each other some.  I know they like each other it's just that Cajsa has to be in the mood to play with the Elf.  I just hope things settle down soon.

April

You need to put her in a crate unless you are looking right at her. Dachshunds will do anything for food or food-like substances. Just think of it like putting Elf in her crib or playpen it is a safe place for her to be while you cannot keep all eyes on her! It might not be what she likes but it is what is best for her.

Good Luck
Jen

Jen mentioning the playpen made me think of an ex-pen.  :idea1: Maybe you could make an area just for her with a small ex-pen.  It wouldn't be as confining as a crate and you could have a potty area/tray in it.

I will try and see what I can do this weekend.  I'll be home for most if not all of it writing papers for class.  Maybe I can get the entire kitchen dachie proofed so I can simply gate her in there again.  I did it in the past and she was OK with it most of the time, although I don't always do it everyday anymore.  I will try to make sure I do that again and see if it helps.
