Title: how often do you bath your doxie
Post by: jamalucy on February 16, 2007, 03:18:10 PM
I bathed Willie today as i try to bath a few of my dogs around once a week or so. I then bath the others the next time since i have 7 to keep up with.
How often do you bath your doxies? What do you bath them with or what type of shampoo?
I am just curious.
Thanks,

I take Berman and Lucy to the Petsmart groomer about once a month - they are both indoor dogs.  In the winter, I take them less - maybe once every 2 or 3 months.  In the summer - when they are outside more - once a month.  I found bathing them more often makes their skin really dry.  They really don't stink much - I just notice they may start scratching their ears or scootin' their bottoms so those are other indicators that it's groomer time!

I tried bathing Berman at home when he was a puppy.  I just used Johnson's baby shampoo.  There was some pet shampoo I got that I had an allergic reaction to, but I can't remember what it was.  The baby shampoo worked great though!  I decided to use the groomer because the puppers can get bathed, ears cleaned, butts squeezed and nails clipped for $12 (I opt to not have them doused in cologne!)

I've always bathed my dachsies when I can't take the smell anymore.  No joke.   On average, it's about once every 8 weeks or so.  I really try not to bathe them too often as it does dry out their skin and can rob the fur of oils which protect them (somewhat) from the elements.

I do get their nail clipped monthly as neither one can stand dremelling.

My four get baths every six to eight weeks in the winter....every four to six in the summer.  Buelah has a real problem with dry skin so my vet gave us a really good shampoo for sensative skin.  I use it on all four.  I think it really depends on the weather and how much they are outside.
Of course, there are always the "Hey mom, I rolled in duck poo today", baths in between.......

I bathe Cookie about every 6-8 weeks.  She HATES baths so I really don't look forward to bathing her.  I have 2 different dog shampoos, an oatmeal shampoo and a fruity smelling pashion fruit shampoo.
In between baths we use the doggie wipes on her.
I also clean her ears about every 6 weeks too.  She's a pretty clean dog.

Must admit only 3-4 times a year, the long hairs we find don't seem to smell to much, Amy may get a few more than Ollie as her hair catches EVERYTHING. However Emma (shorthair) was a diffrent story that  was every other week as she tended to need it. I use Neutragena T gel or pure washing soap, and take them in prior to cleaning the shower as that way we get all the soap out.'

Since my girls are two big couch potatoes, we don't need to bathe too often.  If they get stinky, we do a bath....seriously a few times a year.   Maddie tends to have skin sensitivities, so I've been using the Watkins Pet Shampoo.  Very moisturizing and it smells like lemon.
