Title: Animal Evacuation Situation for New Orleans--How to Help!
Post by: Julia H on September 01, 2005, 01:03:07 AM
I have been haunted by the thought of all the pets in dire straits due to the disaster that is still unfolding in New Orleans. I'm sure it concerns you, too, being the animal lovers you are! One of my greatest fears has always been that I might be separated from my pups in such a disaster (though I'd rather die than leave them!), so I tracked down some information on it and thought you might be interested, too. Here's a link to it:

http://www.lsu.edu/university_relations/mediacenter/nr/20050831_vet.htm

I also found out where to send money to help out, and while they don't seem to have a way to take online donations yet, here's a link to that info. so you can send a check if you're so moved:

http://www.lvma.org/
(there's a link from that page to a form you can print out to send with your check)

And, of course, prayers are so powerful!

Love to all...

THANK GOODNESS!!  I'm so happy someone else is as bothered by those thoughts as I am!  It's all I can think about, especially when I see some footage of some poor dog standing alone on a roof top.  And think how many cats must be up trees unable to come down.

I came to this site tonight to check and see if anyone knew how I could help. Thank you so much for posting this!  Please post more info if you get it.  Let's all pray those animals get taken care of, and donate what we can.  If we all help a little, it adds up to a lot.   How afraid they must be not understanding what's happening, or if anyone is coming for them.  Man, sometimes it sucks having such a soft heart for animals.  (Because right now it's breaking!)

Prayin' for all the animals in the south,

I was just online reading all the horrible stories and crying quietly...  I wish there was so much more that I can do for all these poor people (and their animals)...
Thank you for posting these sites for us to help in any way we can.  I will be sending a check in hopes that it will make a difference!!!

PS - are any of members in need of help???  I remember the last hurricane hit where Sandra lived - I sure hope she didn't get hit by this one too!!!

It is absolutely heartbreaking.....As I hold my 2 close at night, I too am haunted by those that can't find their families.  Thanks for the info - and prayers and rays have been sent since Katrina made her appearance.

Thanks for posting that-
I heard here that Petco is rounding up for the disaster too to help animals.  I can't imagine losing my little girl.

You know, while watching CNN this morning, as terrible as the human suffering is and the destruction and loss of human life, I just keep imagining the poor kitty's and dog's and other small caged animals, that their owners cannot get back to, trapped in attic's, tree's or left to wander homeless and my heart breaks!   I have already sent a donation and if anyone knows of anything else to do, please let me know!   The fed's seem like they are taking too much time to help the human's, let alone the animals!  My prayers to everyone down there!

Thanks, Julia.  I was watching the Dateline special last night and when I saw those dogs sitting on wood in the water, I just broke down.  I can only hope that whoever was shooting that footage got someone to help them!!  I have to think they did.....

My sweet little Toby (our new addition) made the journey from New Orleans on the day the hurricane hit.  I had been sick with worry as we watched the progress of the storm.  We know that his foster family was able to evacuate to safety, but still haven't heard if they have a home left.    I just cannot imagine how difficult it must be for those poor people and animals.  During the hurricanes that hit Florida last year there were hundreds of animals in need of help.
Please please please....if you can send a donation, send it soon.  There is no amount to small.   You might also want to call your local animal shelters to see if they are doing any sort of drive.  Quite often things like blankets, towels, old crates, and dog food can be collected and sent to shelters in the stricken areas.  ANYTHING and EVERYTHING helps.
And as Julia said...prayer.  It is indeed powerful!
Title: Website banners
Post by: Julia H on September 01, 2005, 10:43:39 AM
Also, they have banners with a link you can put on your website at the Humane Society site:

https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005?source=drfhbw

I have emailed Drew to see if he'd put one on Wiener Writings. I have asked my webmaster to put one on www.recreating-eden.com as well. If you have a website, consider adding a banner to help people donate easily! (You know if I'm putting up a banner on my site, I must be serious--I am SO picky about the aesthetics!)

All of the PetSmarts and PetCos here in Houston are also taking donations for the pets in need in New Orleans.  I don't know if the ones in other areas are doings so or not.

Like all of us here I have been crying for all the people and animals affected by Katrina.  I sent donations to the ASPCA, the HSUS and the Houston SPCA (as they are receiving so many rescued animals).  It is heartbreaking to watch the news.  Why is it taking so long to get help down there?  Also sending prayers and doxie rays.  We all know how powerful doxie rays are.

It is so heartbreaking to think of all those precious little souls left behind; wondering and waiting to be reunited with their loved ones.  My prayers are with each and every one of them, their hoomans, and the HEROS trying to get in and bring them to safety.  God speed.

Two more very worthy organizations are:  http:\\www.noahswish.org (//http://http:\\www.noahswish.org) ~AND~ http:\\bestfriends.org (//http://http:\\bestfriends.org).  Noah's wish was formed specifically to assit in disaster situations.

Petfinder also has a special section/message board set up for Katrina related relief.

My local humane society is taking up a collection of pet items.   We bought a whole bunch of soft food that Max rejected.  Rather than take it back to the store, we're going to donate it.  I'm probably going to donate one of the kennels as well.

Permission to cross post.

The devastation that Hurricane Katrina has wreaked upon the United
States' Gulf Coast is nothing short of horrific. Among those victims of
this natural disaster are millions of pets. There are many animals
rescued that need temporary or permanent homes. There are many people
who need pet-friendly housing.

In order to aid the victims, Man's Best Friend Software has created a
clearinghouse site for displaced pets, those who are willing to open
their home, hotel, motel or apartment to displaces families with pets,
and rescue organizations. Using this site, pets can be linked up to
willing persons who can provide them with what they need.

Please feel free to use this site right now. You can access the site
at:

http://pethelp.mbfs.com

The site is provided for zero charge at all. There is no obligation,
and any information gathered will never be used for any marketing or
soliciation purpose whatsoever. It will never be sold, and you won't be
hit up for money from any other charities. In fact, soliciting posters
for money is strictly forbidden.

We aren't looking for money. We're just looking to help. Hopefully
this clearinghouse will help us do exactly that -- providing a way for
millions of displaced pets to find a loving home.

Thanks, please find a way to help.

I sent money to ASPCA, Noahs wish and Humane society!  My boss/partner has listed one of his rental houses as a place for a family here in Maryland, we are pet friendly and we hope to help a family with pets!   If there is anything else we can do, we are willing to help!  We are praying for the people and animals caught in the hurricane and pray no others hit this year!
