Title: Question
Post by: papbouv on February 05, 2007, 10:59:00 PM
Patches is a Long Hair she is 13 mos old know they may not get their full coat till they are about 5 years old. My question is it normal for them to be fuzzy looking?is that a double coat and the fuzzy's are the undercoat?. Figured by now she should have lost her puppy coat when a puppy she had dapples but she lost those as well.?

I have the honour like Dee Dee to be the owner of a HAIRY HAIRY long hair, AKA AMy we think God said all long hairs through that door and she went throught twice. Amy has a long outer coat and a thick thorn or under coat some of which gets fluffy( around the feet), but they say that is from being neutered. Finger in a light socket describes her in high wind, and her daughter looked as if she was going the same way.
Oliver I have been told has a good coat rather like a red setters, Angel Angus was similar, their pantaloons, and leg feathering came at about three and the chest keeps going. I don't know about the dabble.
But the main thing is to love, cuddle and handle as they don't know what's right or wrong.

ps sometimes the under coat does not come out when they change coats and you have to strip it out either by hand or a fine toothed comb, either way you won't be a nice mommy

Thanks Roberta was wondering I brush her & comb her do not use a fine toothed comb more like a Greyhound comb know all about hand stripping since having Bouvier's never could do it to them.I just used clippers on them to me hand stripping was painful & mean yeah they say they get use to it but ripping out hair has to hurt? This spring I will start combing more no use doing it now in cold weather.Patches should be a breeze after having Bouvier's 20 years or so thats why I also got Buddy NO Hair to mess with but I'm learning Bouvier's are allot calmer dog than a Dobe.Have heard when the full adult coat comes in the dapples may come back? When her dapples showed her name Patches made more since.Gizmo is a Papillon which just has a single coat no undercoat so did not have much to go by the fuzzys did look like the undercoat the Bouv's had just was not sure.
Thanks for the information

Brekke is hairy like Amy and Hallie.  This is the reason I call her "Fluffy-Butt"!  If I blow dry her completely, it's worse!  Oh, well - gotta love 'em!  She wasn't fully coated until age 3, btw.

I don't know about the dappling, but I have a long hair with a not-so-correct coat. It helps to get a stripper that is used on wire hairs ( I also have a wire, so I had the strippers) and use it like a comb on her. Gretchen happens to like being brushed, so she doesn't mind the strippers at all. In fact, I think it scratches her back and feels good. AND...it gets a lot of the fuzzies out. Of course, Gretchen is pretty much all fuzzy, but it tames it down. I also should say, Gretchen doesn't have very long hair. I've seen DD's Hallie and I'm thinking Roberta's Amy is the same - anyway, their hair is so long, I don't think strippers would work for them. Oh, and if you try the strippers, get the larger toothed one - not the fine toothed one used for the face of wires. And don't bother with the expensive ones. For your use, the cheaper, the better.

I have two strippers I had bought for the Bouvier's one small one large so all I have to do is comb her with them right. I was told with the Bouvier's you had to put your thumb on the hair and just pull it out to me that would hurt none of the Bouv's liked it so I just clipper ed them.Combing with it I could do should I wait till Spring top do it our heat comes from the ceiling we have carpet but to me it gets cool around my ankles. When it gets really cold outside I put sweaters on the inside dogs in the house hubby keeps it on 68*never any higher.Of course when the dogs go outside and its really cold I put their coats on seems like that is all I do put coats on & take coats off like having little kids,at least when I say put your nose in here everyone does. Then just have to do the chest strap so that helps even ole Buddy is not chewing on his coat any more since he is the coldest of them all.

Yes, use the stippers like a comb - don't use your thumb. You can do it any time of year. It just takes a little of the top coat off.
