I recently read Cesar Millan's book, which for me boiled down to the following philosophy: "You should walk your dog every morning for approximately one hour, and at least a half hour every evening, making sure that you are leading the walk and providing lots of exercise. All dogs crave exercise and if you establish yourself as alpha and be sure to provide lots of exercise, your dog's problems will resolve themselves."
Now I have four dachshunds, a mini, a tweenie, and two standards. I refer to them as "The Herd." ("I thought I ordered 200 oxen and instead I got..." "I know, sir, 200 dachshunds.") The Herd, both individually and collectively have but one purpose and goal in life and that is to sleep on my bed 23 hours and 50 minutes out of each day. The other ten minutes breaks down as follows: four minutes eating, and three two-minute potty breaks. In fact, when we attempt to get Guinness to go on a walk, he has to be carried to the destination so he will walk back home to get back to bed.
I know that Cesar is very well thought of, but I just don't see The Herd chomping at their leashes for an invigorating romp twice a day. I DO see Dr. Beau Leaky (yes, he is!) chomping on Cesar's book, so I'll stop now and get the book from him before he tears the cover off!
I don't know if Cesar Milan ever had a dachsie on his show. A friend of mine, though, was using some of Cesar Milan's techniques on Zeke and it was very effective.
Zeke and Zora go nuts when I produce the leashes. They love to walk. My past two dachsies love walks, too. Rudy-angel could walk forever. Max-angel was not as crazy about walks, but he would go along. By the time he got to 15 years old, he had had enough of walking. I could barely get him more than one or two houses up the block before he decided it was time to turn around.
Cesar Millan had a daschie on the show the other day. She was very possesive of her mom and would not let others near the mom. She had biten several people. Cesar Millan came in and solved the problem in about 30 minutes. The daschie did end up biting Cesar before it was all over.
WALK?!?! Your dachsie walks?!?! Berman and Lucy DRAG me around the neighborhood. :walk2:
I swear, I could hook a sled up to them and they could drag me all over the place! By the time we get home, my arms are sore and I'm exhausted! I always want to jog with them, but knowing my luck, they'd poop out on me and I'd have to carry them home!
I did see the Cesar Milan episode with the aggressive dacshie. I've tried to use some of his techniques too, but of course Berman and Lucy just humored me for a minute then turned right back into the brats they are!
LOL that gave me a good chuckle.
Hallie too is with the loves to walk group. We go for a 30-45 minute walk every day and she runs much of the time. By the end she is usually trotting and doing more sniffing than the first part. We also play during the day and go to class a couple times a week, she'd get really bored staying home all the time, she's used to being on the go.
