I found this site recently and just joined today. I have two dachshunds, a mini longhaired black and tan named Winston and a mini smooth red named Murphy, 6 months and 4 months respectively. I just got Murphy on Saturday and I was wondering if I should be interfering in the puppy play. They are playing pretty rough, and Winston just runs right over poor Murph. They both seem to be enjoying themselves, but I'm a little worried about them hurting themselves.

As for the puppy play, most of the time puppies play vigorously and no one ever gets hurts. Since they are somewhat close in age, I am guessing that the size difference isn't all that great. If one dog was two or three times bigger, then I would be careful about play. Also if the play seems to be aggression only and real fighting rather than puppy nips, you might need to interfere. But for the most part, it is okay to let them play, even if it gets a bit rough. As the boys grow, they may also work out dominance issues which is not play, but is important for establishing each one's place in the pack. Try not to interfere there either, unless someone is being seriously hurt.

Hello and welcome. Would love to see some pictures of your babies. I have two smooth red "tweenies" named Winston (yeah...I love that name...don't you?) and Zoe. I also have an Australian Shepherd Mix named Sheba...
and 5 cats (they were all strays) and a bunny rabbit I saved from my doxies....(have you ever seen two doxies taking turns throwing a bunny rabbit up in the air?)....the bunny is black and white and was someone's pet but we never could find the owner.
