Title: Vacuum cleaner survey
Post by: Teresa on January 26, 2007, 08:10:58 AM
A little over a year ago we bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel Bagless vacuum cleaner. The mistake was in the Bagless part. With lots of carpet and two dogs, all we do is empty the canister. I guess that means it works well, but because of the dust from emptying it out and the inconvenience, we have decided to go back to a vacuum cleaner with bags. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm very interested in this too! We have a Hoover bagless that is about 5 years old and dying. I just told Drew yesterday that we needed a new one, but don't know what to get. Wonder if those Dysons are worth the $$??  :dontknow:

I have an Electrolux upright that is over 20 years old and still going strong.  It has survived a few chewings-on by puppy Ozzy, and a couple of unexpected trips down the stairs.  Speaking of stairs, it has an attachment that allows me to easily vacuum stairsteps, too.  It cost us around $400 when we bought it, and it has been worth every cent.

My folks have a canister-type Electrolux that is even older than mine that still works just fine.

I've heard that Dysons are good, but expensive.

So far, the reviews I've read are really good for the Eureka Boss Smart Vac. I've been looking at the Electrolux, also. They have come down a little bit in price. Thought of the Dyson, but once again, have to deal with it being bagless, and we found you really have to go outside to empty it unless you want dust back in the house. The little handhelds are fine to empty inside, but the big ones don't do so well.

my only suggestion: after you decide which one to get, don't just buy one already boxed and take it home. I read all the Consumer Reports, yadda yadda, went out and bought this thing and it is bigger than a baby elephant and I'm sorry, but wee little moi with the arthritic shoulder can hardly use the sucker.
So DH ends up dping most of the vacuuming.

Hmm...

Ahem, Leslie.....are you sure you didn't have some master plan going heah?

Sometime back, I had a Eureka Boss and while it picked up nicely, it sounded like a jet engine.  It was LOUD!  I'm none to impressed with my current Kenmore upright.  I've heard Kirby and Rainbows are good, but pricey.

we have  dyson (upright) which is bagless and I swear by it, have had it for about 8 years and it still works the same as it did when we bought it. If it went I would fork out the money for another in a second.

Is the Dyson hard to empty? Maybe I should ask if you have to empty it several times when vacuuming. I think part of the problem with the Hoover is the way the filter takes up so much room. Also, if it is 2/3 full, it will lose suction and start spitting dust back out.
One thing I have read about the Eureka now is they have made it much quieter. I plan to go somewhere that has them out so I can try one. I think Sears usually does this.

I love my Kirby...so does Rick - he does the major amount of vacuuming in our house!  I also have central vac, but after getting the garage insulated, sheet rocked, and painted, the central vac has never been the same - they had to remove the connections when they did the insulation and sheet rock!  Something got bent, I am convinced!  Central vac was $1100 for two outlets inside my 1345 square foot home, and about 7 years after construction - a retrofit, and the Kirby was $1200 with the carpet shampooer attachments.  My school neighbor, Rebecca, (Mrs. Martinez - mom to Frida and Willie) has a Dyson and swears by it.

Which model do you have?

Mine is the first model upright think a D1. No hepa filter etc, just a plain unfussed vaccuum cleaner. I have never liked barrel types as I always figure it loses a lot of suction with the long tube, plus you have to stoop to use it.

I have the Dyson Animal 15 I believe has the ball,I love it works great not hard to empty plus very easy to get my hair out of the beater bar. I went to a Electrolux store by my house before I bought the Dyson my Grandparents had one lasted forever at the store what they showed me was over $2,000.00 did not even know they made vacuums that cost that much.I have had Kirby's(too heavy for me) have had Dirt Devil, brain not working the one the little old man sells all quit on me due to my hair wrapping around the beater bar. Love my Purple Dyson need to see if the make an extention for the wand part a little too short for me but have not asked them yet. It has Great Suction the attachments are a little tricky at first till you learn how to work them no bags to buy,not real loud,& has a Hepa Filter.

Ps: Patches Hates it have to crate her Buddy not sure about it. OH Does Not Have a LIGHT in front which I think is a big mistake on Dyson's part I always liked a light.

Yes Orek is the one the little old man sells forgot the name of it I had one liked it light weight but my hair would go around the beater bar would have to take all the screws out of the bottom and clean the beater bar.Matter of fact I did it so much stripped the screws used Duck tape to keep the bottom on. At the time I had it had my Papillon and my 110# Bouvier and Bouvier's Shed also had a cat, cat hair is the worst  to pick up. The Orek you have the upright then the little vacuum I still have the little canister vacuum use it as a Dog Dryer works good for that.
Had a cat for a while slept on my husbands bed my Dyson did a pretty good job of removing the cat hair from the quilt so I could wash the quilt I will never have another cat this was a stray I had taken in would not let me brush her.

The Dyson may let me consider going bagless, but its the only one that would. I was at Sears earlier today, but apparently it is vacuum buying weekend or something. Several people wanting to try them out today and I didn't have a ton of time to wait around. Also, they had one of those really pushy salespeople working. I'm glad I found out by watching her with someone else! I'm going to go back when I'm off one day next week and see what I think about the different ones they have there. At least they carry a lot of different brands and models, and they have the carpet for you to try them on.

Hi Teresa.  I have the Dyson Animal and absolutely love it!  I am sensitive to dander and both the bagless and bagged vacuums never lasted very long for me.  I hated vacuuming because the whole house would end up smelling like dog and doggy feet and it was very expensive to keep replacing the filters.  The saleman at Bed, Bath, and Beyond talked me into it because I was very leery about the expensive price.  I was able to use a 20% coupon and they had a promotion at the time for a $100 dollar bed Bath and Beyond gift card if you bought a Dyson.  The saleman also said that they would have no problem if I didn't like it and returned it.
As I said before, I love mine because...(1) no filters to replace, just rinse the filter and let it dry (2) no doggy smell when I vacuum (3) easy to empty unlike most bagless (just place in the garbage bag and pull the trigger) and they have special emptying instructions for allergy sufferers.  It seems a little complicated at first with all of the pieces and how to use them, but it is very easy to use and quick to switch attachments for furniture, draperies, etc. They only negative I can say is I'm not crazy about the purple color.

PS. I'm not a Dyson saleman or anything (Ha Ha)  :2funny:  just a big fan of a good product.

What is it with Dyson?  I know they have good vacuums, but there is the bright purple and an equally bright school-bus yellow!  What can't they make a nice dark green , or a nice maroony-red, or even a metal such as a copper colored one?  I should be on advisory boards, doncha think?
