Title: Grrrrrrr......Diapers for Willy and Alex
Post by: PattyInAK on January 16, 2007, 01:54:22 PM
Lately Willy and Alex have been marking all over the house.   :cussing:
I'm pretty sure both are doing it.  One will mark, then the other has to mark over it, and so the first has to re-mark.  I really don't understand what could be causing this.  They have puppy pads during the day, and we go outside a few times in the evening.  They have puppy pads available to them all the time, day and night.  I'm really frustrated with this behavior, and I don't want to get so that I am yelling at them.    I guess I should have them checked for urinary problems.  Nothing else has changed, and there hasn't been any stress in the house.  In the meantime, I am looking at various types of diapers and belly bands for the boys.  So far I like the belly bands I found from a gal who sells on Ebay.  I believe hers are custom made, and very resonably priced.

Do belly bands work for girls too?  I've been trying to train Lucy to use her new ramp to get up on my bed. When she gets up there, I praise her and then she pees everywhere.  I've washed my comforter about 5 times this month!  I would love to put a belly band or something on her during this training process.

She used to wear denim panties that came with disposable pads when she was little - she had a submissive urination problem.  I guess I can put those on her if the belly bands don't work.

I found some for male and females at Petsmart.com and by punching in Dog Diapers on ebay.

I had a similar issues with Rudy & Max.   One of them would have an accident, then the other one would mark the accident, in which case the first one came back to mark the mark.

With males, you're pretty much fighting their internal mechanisms, especially if the two of them are still having sibling rivalry.   You'd think that by 9 years of age, the pack order is pretty well set with Willy & Alex, but it sounded like in previous posts that they still challenge each other.   This is carried over into their peeing habits.   The dog with the "freshest" mark is the dominant one.  Clearly, peeing on each others spots is a passive-aggressive way for them to challenge each other without having to resort to biting or fighting.

I never came up with a training or pack solution for Rudy & Max.  Ultimately, it was a matter of finding the first spot "the accident" and totally eliminating the spot.   I ended up buying a carpet machine and cleaning the carpets between once per month and every two weeks.  This didn't totally eliminate the problem, but it cut down on it substantially.

I've run into the same problem with my two boys Patty.  They seem to go for a long time without marking and then all of a sudden they are doing the mark / remark thing.  I spoke with my vet and he told me pretty much what David posted.  He also suggested a product called Wee Wee made by Four Paws for eliminating odors.  This is the only product I have found that really works.  You can use it on tile, hardwood, or carpeting.  I don't have any wall to wall carpets in my house but I have used it on my throw rugs and it really is amazing.   I found it at a local pet supply shop but they may carry it at the larger chain stores as well.
Good luck and let me know how the belly bands work if you decide to try them.

That is odd that they would suddenly do that. I have not had to face that problem yet, knock on wood, but I have friends with intact males that use the belly bands and swear by them. Maybe if you get really girl pink ones with big flowers the boys will be embarrassed to wear them and stop marking .Hee.  :thumb: I do bet that isn't going over well with Mom and her new house though! Let us know if you try the bands I'd like to know what you think about them.

Terri, thanks for the tip on "Wee Wee", I will give it a try if I can find it.  Our Animal Food Warehouse carries a lot of great products.  And, DD, I do intend to order the belly bands today.  No, this marking thing is NOT going over well with me in the new house.  Thank GOD I don't have carpeting.  Can you imagine?........ugh and yuck!!!

By the way, since Dan and I moved into our carpet-less house, my sinus congestion espisodes are completely gone, and Dan's have been reduced by at least 75%.   He doesn't snore nearly as much either.
