Title: Three months with the Zs
Post by: David C. on January 15, 2007, 06:40:28 PM
Barely two weeks after Max's passing, we opened our homes to Zora & Zeke as Yamisi needed to give them up because her son was severely allergic.   Yamisi was heartbroken to give them up, but took solace in that she knew where they were going.

It's been a fun three months really getting to know this pair.   They are wonderful puppers.  Comparisons to Rudy & Max are inevitable.  They posess traits that I've seen in both Rudy & Max, but they are definitely their own dachshies.   The one major difference between these two and Rudy & Max is that they are "breeder dogs" versus puppy mill / pet store dogs.   When you have someone who is breeding for the love of the breed, it shows.  These two have amazing dispositions and conform well to the breed standard (especially Zora).   With the calmer disposition, both are far less predatory and don't "hunt" the way Rudy & Max did.

Zora is our princess, beauty queen and Ms. Piggy all wrapped up into one.   Food is her life as she can snarf down her portion of kibble faster than any dog we've ever seen.  While she can be both regal and elegant, Zora is the submissive one of the pair, readily rolling on her back to expose her belly, but when Zeke "crosses the line" she can become quite ruthless him.   Zora is affectionate and loves to be around her owners.   I wouldn't call her "one owner", but she is very protective of her nuclear family.   When strangers come over, it takes a few minutes for her to relieve her defensive posturing.

Zeke is a character.  He's everything a male dachshund is supposed to be:  brash, fearless, somewhat egotistical, territorial, loyal and downright silly at times.   The one thing he is not is physically aggressive.  Zeke is "all bark".   Zeke and I have frequent conversations in "Bark".   We play on the ground as I get on all fours and drop on my elbows and we talk to each other, goading the other one to make a move.  But as soon as I break character and tell Zeke to "come", he will immediately drop his stance and come to me.   Zeke is far more social with strangers than Zora, becoming universally beloved by our vet's staff in a very short time.

We're so glad that the dogapult found us.   I can't imagine what life would have been like had we not taken in the Zs.

I love your Zeke and Zora updates.  They sound like wonderful WIENERFUL dachsies.  How is Jessica liking two younger more playful hounds?

Jessica is enjoying them.   She does treat them well, for the most part.   Jessica will sit alongside Zeke and Zora for a while and pet them nicely, until her curiosity gets the better of her and she starts rolling up their ears and/or pulling them.   The dogs either sit and take it, or they get up and walk away.   She will say "Hi Zora", to Zora and knows how to say "Zeke", and refers to them as "puppies".   Jessica does get excited when she sees them running and wagging their tails.

Cannot believe it has only been that time. Zeke sounds like OLiver all bluster in the end. I think it was a win win situation for that pair and you and your family.

They sound like such characters. They are so lucky you took them in as you are to have gotten them....and Yamisi is lucky too to get such a perfect home for them. I think this wasn't all just by chance.
