Title: Senior Sam not feeling well.
Post by: Marcia from MI on January 15, 2007, 02:59:00 PM
Sam is now 15 years old and up until a few weeks ago was doing quite well.   He has slowed down quite a bit, but still gives the cats what for.  However over the weekend Sam started acting weird, he refused to eat unless hand fed and would only drink if I used a syringe.  On occasion he would pace and then stare at the wall or get stuck in corners and at other times sleep.  That was Saturday on Sunday he was back to normal, following me all over the house and trying to get the cat's food.  Now today it was the same as Saturday, so I called the vet.  I talked to Dr Cindy and she said it sounds like he was having mini strokes and there wasn't anything  that could be done except let him rest for a few days and if he didn't seem better to bring him in.   The weather has been so bad today that I didn't want to chance driving with my baby in the car.  Sam is resting in his crate now and seems better - I wish there were some sun because I know that always perks him up.

I'm so sorry to hear this Marcia.  I went through the same thing with Harry.  He was 17.  Harry seemed to get disorientated and not know where he was, and would get stuck in corners just like Sam.  Harry got so that he wouldn't eat or drink, and it happened fairly quickly after he starting acting strange, like within 24 hours.  At the time I didn't know that it could be mini strokes, but I did get the idea that Harry's body was in the process of shutting down.  Harry did let me know "it was time" and he was gently put to sleep with me by his side at his vet's office.  Please let us know how he is doing.  I know this is heartbreaking.

Oh Marcia I hate to hear this too. Our Sam who lived to be 17 (doxie) also had mini strokes but he went a long time with them, this doesn't necessarily mean it is nearing the end for Sam. It sounds good that he bounced back some from that episode. I know how hard it is to see them age though. He is tough! Please keep us posted, many rays and prayers coming from us too.

Sending rays Sam's way.   Having been down this road so recently with Max, I can truly empathize with everything both you and Sam are going through.  Fifteen years is a good, solid run for a dachsie.  It's hard to see that when it's your pupper, because when they're 15, you want to see them make 16, etc.  It's only been since Max's passing that I could truly appreciate how long he was with us.

My gut is telling me that Sam right now is just on the "Old Age Rollercoaster" and still has a few more ups and downs before the ride stops at the Rainbow Bridge.

Title: Re: Senior Sam not feeling well. Update
Post by: Marcia from MI on January 16, 2007, 12:02:36 PM
Dis is Eddie.  Momma said I could post th update cuz she is busy writing for her blog.  Sam is doing a bit better - he sleeps alot.  Momma bought some gourmet doggy food as a treat for us and after I finished mine I went to get some of Sam's, but he wouldn't let me have any.  AND I gave him my blankee to use.

Marcia here Sam is a bit better.  His appetite and water intake hasn't been effected.  Right now he is asleep on the couch while I write for my blog.  I promised him I would spend the afternoon with him and Eddie.  I have to work tomorrow & Thursday so if Sam hasn't perked up by then it's off to Dr Cindy's on Friday.   Eddie stays with Sam all the time and is such a good brother.  If Sam were awake he'd say thanks for all the rays - so in his place I say thank you all so much.
