Title: Fostering a Senior
Post by: AnnieofNJ on January 14, 2007, 08:09:23 AM
This wednesday I was given a new doxie to foster.  She is a 14 years old, red smooth tweenie and just so sweet.  Her owners wanted to have her euthanized, but the vet didn't see any reason to put her down.  She is under weight and has arthritis in her hind legs, but she does get around just fine.  The vet and I are friends, so she gave me a call and I was happy to take her.  The vet is going to give her a complete checkup (free of charge) and if there are any health issues, we will deal with them.  Right now she is doing great.  She loves to eat and sleep.  My other three are ignoring her.  I belong to a rescue group and we will be putting her picture on petfinder.com.  I know the odds of someone adopting a 14 year old are slim to none, but I have no problem with letting her live the rest of her life with me.

Once I get my digital camera operating, I'll post her picture.

Thank you for giving her some more time. My senior went on for a good few years after that and are worth all the trouble.

I think its wonderful that you are fostering a senior.  :thumb:  ALthough it breaks my heart to think she has no idea where her first family of so long went. Poor thing.

Thank you for taking her in!!

Lately I have been thinking about my Twinkie angel.  Hard to believe she has been gone 3 years now!!  She was a smooth red too, although when i got her she was a really BIG standard.  After we moved to Western WI, she had seperation anxiety pretty bad, and lost weight and after that it was hard to get weight on her. Towards the end she was less than 20 pounds so was probably the size of a Tweenie!!  Sounds like your foster may look a lot like my Twinkie did!!

Being a renter instead of a home owner limits what I can have, but if I do get another dog I will most likely get one who is already a senior!!
