Title: Buddy Saves Patches
Post by: papbouv on December 29, 2006, 07:56:10 PM
Think I have told you before I sometimes let all the dogs out together in the backyard I put Buddy in a harness & 30 ft tie out cable so the girls Gizmo & Patches can get away from him he is still some what wild at 8 mos old but he is a big Doberman and the girls are little 7# Gizmo & 11# Patches. Patches loves to play with Buddy but this way she can also get away from him.I have never heard Buddy howl I was in the kitchen starting to bake some cookies I hear Buddy howling in the back yard I go out to see what is up I first see Buddy ask him if he is playing wolf then I look down.Patches is franticly pawing at her mouth I know what happened she has a stick stuck in her mouth. I pick her up I cannot get it out I grab Gizmo put her in the house am holding Patches grab the car keys take off to the vets up the street.Of course they are packed I say Patches has a stick stuck in her mouth they send us to a room I hear emergency in room 2 in comes Dr Green she tries one time says we will give her some gas they were in the back quite some time Dr Green comes out holding the stick says no damage to her mouth or teeth lucked out there. Waited for the little beaver to wake up took her home. Pull in the drive way hear Buddy whining in the backyard he sure was happy to see Patches the nosed each other and were very happy. Buddy got extra pats & treats for saving his little sister, he acted like he knew he was special not bad for a 8 month old Dobie.

Way to go Buddy for looking out for your dachsie sister!   You deserve extra treats tonight!

Dobies are smart doggies.   I once adopted a dobie/shepherd mix at the landscape company where I worked.   Her name was Scallywag.   She was hands down one of the smartest dogs I ever knew.  Her she is playing with a young Rudy & Max, circa 1995.  She is 11 or 12 in this picture, Rudy and Max were 3 and 6, respectively.

Here is another shot.   Her dobie features are quite evident in this photo.  Scally's way of begging for food was to sit in front of you, pull her ears back and just stare at you.   Scally went to the bridge in May of '98 at 14 1/2 years old.   She truly was an extraordinary animal.

I read an article awhile back about this happening with a larger breed dog.  Apparantly the owner was playing fetch with the dog and threw the stick way out.  He went looking for the dog when it didn't return with the stick and found it had lodged in a similar manner.

It's always great to hear how dogs communicate to their humans when something is wrong and we are needed. They seem to know which sound will bring us to them. I'm so glad Buddy took care of his sister and everything ended up okay! I'm sure Buddy was beside himself waiting for you to return!  Extra treats were certainly in order and I'm sure Buddy enjoyed them all!
