Title: Hallie and her Papillon Cousins
Post by: Dee Dee and Hallie on December 19, 2006, 02:26:29 PM
The Papillon power outage refugees are still here, Hallie thinks they are kewl! They were just starting to play in this shot, mean ol' Mom had to step in and pick her up and stop the games :( I so hate our little ones are so fragile!!! She wants to play so bad, the other two really get into it. These are her cousins, Maddie and Callie. Hallie has been the best hostess she lets them do what they want, play with her toys, share her treats, no one squabbles...she even will not come into the room I'm in if one of them is laying in the doorway, they wouldn't do anything to her but she doesn't feel it would be polite.  :angel4: Just before this pic, Maddie dug up a carrot from the garden and Hallie ate it. :)

LOL Kari, it is pretty funny to watch them. They are all so polite to each other you can almost hear them saying

"Oh you go first"
"Not at all I wouldn't think of it, YOU go first"
"No really, it's no problem, please do go ahead"
"No, no no, I would rather you went"

Hallie sits right next to them while they eat and watches but doesn't make a move until they are done then she swoops in and cleans up the bowl. One of the Papillons does sometimes guard her food but it's never more than a very non-scarey growl that everyone else ignores.

That is so great Dee Dee! I call Penny Miss. Pushy Pants becasue she is so bossy! Her best friend is my parent's beagle and it is a good thing she is so submissive! Penny just bosses her around...takes her toys from her!

Are these "Yapillons" related to the ones in the picture with Jessie and Fred?   That was one of the funniest pictures I've ever seen.   Poor Fred was just staring down at one of them like "You can't be serious" and Jessie seemed to have that look like "You're the strangest looking dachshund I've ever seen".

Those are GREAT!  I'm still laughing at the carrot incident!  Sounds like everyone is having a great time.  How are things looking for everyone without power?  Are they getting it back on for them?

I was hoping you would post pictures of the threesome. Actually, I knew you would, I just had to be patient!! Glad they get along so well, but hope everyone gets power again soon. Our area was going through the same thing this time last year after the ice storm so we know how bad it can be, especially with Christmas rapidly approaching.

LOL Patty! It's nice to have them visit and it's nice to send them home.

Awwww Penny Pushy Pants! Well SOMEbody's gotta be boss! You go Penny!!! :thumb:

Wow you have a great memory David! I don't think either of these are related to those Papillons but we found both of them through the lady who owns/owned those in the photos. It is wierd how I keep crossing paths with Papillons!

Thank you so much Jill!! It's great that you posted, I hope you post more often!

Terri there are still a few people without power but the majority is back on. My cousins came on this afternoon finally so she drove the 1.5 hours down tonight and picked up her Papillons. I thought they would go nuts when they saw her but Hallie actually was going more nuts than they were. I'm sure they are glad to be home in their own beds tonight, I know my poor cousin is! I am posting two from the carrot sequence, in the first you can see the carrot in Maddie's mouth and Hallie is shadowing him respectfully. In the second Maddie has dropped it near her and she has her head turned away a little, not wanting to look "pushy". He backed off after this and stood there watching her eat it. I really think he saw it as a toy and was confused that she was eating it.

Ugh Teresa it sure is a pain I'm glad you guys aren't going through this right now. Now they are saying another wind storm is coming tomorrow and another later in the week but nothing like what we just had. (wish I was free this week to take Hallie to the beach and get stormy beach pics!)

We'd love to see that piccie of all the kids! Your Mum has 5 Papillons? Wow! Actually my cousins 2 here are overweight. I worry about that. She loves these 2 dearly! Yes I agree I think Ingrid very much had a Hallie look!

Dee Dee, Too bad you didn't have all the studio lights set up. Then again, getting three dogs to be still would have been quite a challenge! I had to laugh at myself as I was looking at the pictures and thinking "she must have used a really fast shutter speed!" At least I've learned something in the classes. If only I can remember it when I'm taking pictures and not just looking at them...

Lately, I've found myself a lurker here more than a participant but I had to bounce in just to say, GREAT pictures DD.  I'll have to read further down to see who's pooches these are.  I missed that story.  I take it they are just visiting?

BTW, Dolly and Maddie say hello to Hallie.  They say:  Miss Hallie, you are very nice to doggies who come to your house.  We would not act so kindly.  We are called hooligans for nuthin', ya know.  Enjoy your cuzzins, okay?  We wuv you.

Tail wags,
Dolly and Madison.

Sandi again:  My girls are well.  Dolly is really getting gray.  She'll be 10 soon.  Maddie is doing good.   With winter here, her main problem with the itchies seems to be in remission.  And now I'm off to prepare for the guy to come today to re-level my house.  It seems that there are major problems underneath our house all adding up to over $1000.  Gulp!  Good thing Mark is finally working.  He's really liking his job at CMC (CA Men's Colony) where he works the Transfer Out desk.  I'm still at Certified Electronics dealing with people who get mighty testy when their TV is broken.  I'm enjoying my Watkins business and making quite a go at it.  Email or PM me if you'd like more information on our products or business opportunity.  Hope to stay in touch.

Love ya all, Sandi

Wow.  Kewl. Thanks for sharing. You should let Hallie PLAY gosh darn it.  Just make a fist and put it in yer mouth (to keep you from screaming out loud) and let them PLAY for 2 minutes.

It sounds like the Papillions are a very nice breed.  In general do they have sweet temprements in case I ever wanted to, oh, trade in a certain B&T  :stupid: weiner for a dog that might actually LISTEN??

OH man Teresa, I have been setting up the studio lights here and have the usual "trying something for the first time" frustrations. I finally just put the flash on the camera and snapped this shot of my little sugar plum! LOL. I have the strobes working (and it all looks very cool!) but am obviously not understanding the settings yet as I'm getting everything from way overexposed to pure black. Me thinks me needs a good light meter!

Look at you though! You are starting to see what settings must be behind a picture, that is great! It was a very overcast day so pretty dark out, I wanted to freeze action the best I could and since the dogs were mainly white, I chose to use Tv and picked a shutter speed of 640. I find this is about the minimum you can go and still freeze action at dog speed. If the histogram had shown things were too dark at that speed I would have slowed it down but it worked ok. It was a big challenge to photograph black Hallie and the white Pap's and get the exposure right. As you can see, I had to blow some of the highlights on the white dog (see the top of his back) in order to get Hallie halfway exposed right. I didn't want her too dark because when you lighten in photoshop it makes a lot of noise if the exposure was too dark. So I compromised and lightened just Hallie in the shots and darkened the white dogs a bit to even things out. The lens I was using is 2.8, I love shooting wide open for the depth of field but can't really do that for action.

If only I could figure this stuff out for the studio lights! I'll get there, I've only had them for about 30 min LOL but it's frustrating when you just want to go take pictures!

Hey Sandi! Glad you came out! Thanks for the update, I'm glad the girls are doing so well. I cann't belive Dolly is almost 10! Hallie is doing the same as Maddie, her itchies are almost non existant this time of year which is so nice. Ouch on your house problems. I hope that wont be as expensive as it sounds! Good for you on the Watkins too, best of luck with that!!!

Les, I am ruined for life LOL. My last girl, Jessie, screamed in pain during play twice, and had to be crated for 6 long boring scary weeks. I tell Hallie, 5 minutes of fun is not worth 6 weeks of pain and boredom. I don't think she is "with me" on that though LOL. She is an in the moment kinda gal. She plays so wild too, gets runny attacks and dive bombs and grins and zigs and zags...so dang cute! It's one of the reasons I won't ever get another doxie with her though, I would be a nervous wreck since she loves to play. She will just have to settle for playing gently with Mom, going on walks, going to class, going shopping, going visiting...ROTFL I don't think Loki is in any danger of being replaced! Papillons are real nice little dogs though. Papbouv can probably tell you more, I did own one for a time though and have many (show) friends who have them so know quite a few. They are usually nice tempered, they are a bit more "yipey" than a doxie (yipe when picked up wrong or brushing them etc) but they are usually happy, playful, smart little characters. They do shed more than a doxie normally. They tend to luxating patellas and most older ones don't end up with many teeth but those are minor problems compared to some! LOL both Jessie and Hallie listen/ed really well so I don't think it's a doxie thing as much as my poor 2 just had to put up with a lunatic Mother who is so overly protective they had to listen or suffer the "freaked out mommy dance".  :meme:

Barb I was super proud of her, especially since this is HER house and HER beds and HER toys and HER treats. It almost looked like she was checking on her cousins to make sure they were comfy and having a good time! They were great too, thank goodness everyone enjoyed each other and there were no problems.

What a precious shot! You will figure out the lights, probably faster than a lot of people would-and I bet you don't read many of the books out there about them. You probably just work with it until it "feels" right. That is how my husband is with any computer thing and how most artists are with any medium they work in. It is pretty cool to read what you are writing and understand it! I also took a beginner Photoshop class last spring, even though Randy had shown me some stuff in it, so I understand a lot of about those blown out highlights that you can't get back! I hope to take the intermediate course in photoshop, but wish they didn't have the MIT guy teaching it!! I think I'll do the next darkroom class first and then the Photoshop one or maybe the Elements of Photography one, who knows. This was my way of keeping the depression at bay after the wreck last year. It worked well in the Spring/Summer, but I noticed in the fall that I still had times I had to make myself go to class and the creativity wasn't quite there. Of course, the fall had a lot of legal stuff starting to come up, so the wreck was back in the forefront and that is probably why. With the classes so reasonable (about 120.00 for approx. 12 hours of classtime) it is great, affordable therapy. I'm going upstairs in a few minutes to wrap the two prints I have for Meghan for Christmas. I may try to take a picture of them and post it later!
Can't wait to see more of the Hallie shots. This should be fun as we watch you learn and benefit from pics of Hallie!!!!

Wow - I was feeling kind of down today, and then I find HBB piccies!  Just what I needed to cheer up!  (And with papillon cousins, even!)  Siglen was the same kind of hostess - loved sharing her home, sharing her toys, all except the food!  They could have eaten mostly in peace and quiet - but she would have been watching like a hawk, ready to dive bomb in and get some goodies!

Papillons are tough little dogs they also come in all sizes and some have their ears up some have their ears down they love aglity and are usually very active Gizmo when she was young could wear you out throwing the ball for her. My mother-in-laws Papillon has one ear up and one ear down she is allot bigger than Gizmo you do have to watch their teeth and brush them every day Gizmo has very tiny teeth. They do very well in obedience also their coats are easy to care for just brush about twice a week they are single coated dogs the are very fast on their feet and are like jack in the box on jumping. Are great watchdogs you can almost do anything with them they are super smart even saw one as a service dog on Animal Planet the lady was in a wheel chair.
Hallie may need a Papillon play mate since you keep running into Papillon's maybe it is a sign from above???

Teresa I know how you feel, when you first start understanding the photo lingo. I have only been doing this a year next month, it seems a lot longer than that! But I remember when I first started to get the terms too, and believe me there are still many conversations when all I hear is Charlie Brown's teacher talking! (Wha-wha-wha-whaaaa). Oh gosh and then Photoshop...another challenge! I am thankful that I've had to use it for several years now for our web business so was familiar enough to tweak photos in it but I know it's a tough one to learn. Yes please do post your Meghan prints!! I'd love to see them. How ARE you doing now after the wreck are you expected to get back to 100%? Scary how your life can change in an instant isn't it.

Ohhh SIG! What a sweet sweet girl. Just as I remember her, the kindest little soul. She and Hallie would have just tripped all over themselves trying to take good care of each other wouldn't they!

Papbouv that is how I picture them too. Great little dogs. It really is odd how my life keeps crossing paths with Papillons! When I had my dear Jessie, (standard red longhair) we showed all the time too and at the obedience rings, she one day saw a papillon named Jeffrey and went ape!! She normally was very calm and very friendly but not one to run up to a dog and invite play. She was so old hat at shows nothing really phased her. But when she saw Jeffrey, hearts were in her eyes and she bowed and spun and grinned all around him until he started to play back with her. It was so funny like he was her long lost friend. (Really odd thing was they then told me they also had longhaired dachshunds at home!!!). Every show after that she'd get so excited to see Jeffrey, never any other dog anywhere near that.

Hallie is not destined for a sibling though LOL. I have always been a one dog person, I had two at once for 4 years and it was just too hard to take them places where I could easily take one and they missed out on things plus I was always a nervous wreck when they would play. I also felt bad when I pet one and the other would be watching or trained one and the other had to wait. But it's really neat Hallie has a lot of Papillon friends like Jessie did. (she's in love with another friend of mines Papillon, Max).

LOL Roberta and that was before I got out the studio lights! That was just with the flash. Here is the very first official Hallie studio shot! Nothing creative or artsy yet but I was just stoked I got the things to work! This one just seemed to lend itself to be black and white. Although she is starting to get some gray hairs (WHAAAA) that line of white hairs across her nose is a scar she had when I got her from the shelter at 10ish months old and the white flecks above that is just dried yogurt from when she had her head in the container cleaning up the bottom.  :thumb: I'm going to have to fire her makeup artist!

OK, now I have another Hallie shot to hang on for my computer background! I'll post Meg's prints in the next couple of days. She just told me a few minutes ago that my sister-in-law would love a set of the same prints for her house (I didn't wait until Christmas; she got them when she came in late last night). She has finally realized that I developed and printed them in the darkroom myself and didn't just take them in somewhere and have it done. She was really impressed then. I'll either print the other set myself or I may have them done at one of the two places here in town that print black and whites. It might be interesting to see the difference.
As for recovering from the wreck, I have some problems with my left arm and upper back which actually comes from my neck due to the whiplash. I'm doing physical therapy once or twice a week to hopefully improve things or at least keep them from getting worse and avoid having surgery anytime soon. Because my work as a dental hygienist uses a lot of hand work, my biggest concern has been losing the ability to do my job. So far, everything has been okay. I have some problems when I'm super busy, mainly because I'm spending so much time having to bend forward while working and I'll also occasionally get some numbness in my left hand. If it gets worse, surgery may be an option I have to look at, but I would rather stay away from it if at all possible. I have an appt. with a neurosurgeon in the next few weeks, but just for an evaluation so there will be something to measure any changes against. It's amazing how so much can change in just a few seconds!

Roberta, I could tell you it was really dried cat pooh, but it's too close to Christmas to be that mean. LOL.

Teresa there is something about hand developed film! I'm not surprised your SIL wants one too. I'm anxious to see!

Boy it sounds like that wreck really did a number on you. But it also sounds like you've come a long way! I hope it doesn't come down to surgery but if it does, hopefully will help you a lot. Yes you need full use of your hands with the work you do! Boy you aren't kidding, life can change within seconds!!
