Title: If you give your doxies COSEQUIN...............
Post by: PattyInAK on December 15, 2006, 08:35:35 AM
......My vet just prescribed Cosequin DS for Willy and Alex since they are now almost 9 years old.  At the vet office the double strength Cosequin 120-count capsules cost $95.  I found it on ebay for $41.95 plue $4.95 shipping.  The exact same thing.  (sorry Dr. Rapp!)  Anyway, just wanted to pass on the savings to you guys.  Its the same outfit that I bought the Zanies from.  Yep, Willy, Alex and Misty are each getting a bungee gecko for Christmas.

That's about what I pay for it too, it was really expensive to get from my vet also! Hallie has been on it since I got her, I hope it does help!

Kari it supposedly helps keep the joints fluid and "young". I was using it in hopes it would help with back issues too but according to my vet it doesn't help with that as Cosequin works only on the joints. But I don't know if that is true or not, probably no one does for sure. I figure as long as it doesn't hurt anything I'd keep giving it to her. I was giving her fish oil in hopes that would help but now I'm too afraid to with all of the toxins in fish! Gads. It's impossible to know what to do sometimes.

DD gave you a good answer, Kari.  My vet got Willy and Alex started on it as a sort of preventative measure, to keep those joints from becoming too stiff as they ease into old age.   Misty will start taking the Cosequin in a couple of years, but I'm thinking of starting her on a basic glucosamine-chondroitin supplement right now, since she has already had a back issue.  She is very long and slender, unlike Willy and Alex who are shorter in the back and more stout.  The boys have never had a back problem.

Interesting... I started giving Penny a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement about 1 year ago as a preventative measure, and she gets a multi-vitamin as well. She just turned 4! She hasn't had any back issues yet, but I hoping to do whatever I can to possible prevent. She is like Misty and is very long. She isn't super slender - has a lot of muscle. We watch her weight very carefully!

I know sometimes you just can't prevent it, but I am going to to my darnedest to try!

Hi ladies,
Thought I'd let you know that you can also get Cosequin from Drs. Foster and Smith catalog/website, cheaper than the vet but not as cheap as Ebay.  They also list all of the ingredients and amounts so that you can compare products.
I give Franky & Delilah the Dr Foster and Smith version ... Joint Care.  Franky gets Level 3 (for severe arthritis and IVDD) and Delilah (no back issues) gets level 1 for preventative maintenance.
Our vet said that people grade supplements are OK as long as the dosage is appropriate for their size.  I'm sure other pet places carry similar items as well.
It does my heart good to hear of so many pro-active and responsible people like yourselves!

Thanks for the info.  Patches (10) and Cocoa (16) take Cosequin and I never thought to check E-bay!
