Title: Some rays needed.....
Post by: TerriL on November 28, 2006, 09:17:40 AM
I am currently wearing a cast on my left wrist as I fractured it two weeks ago.  In any case, I picked Beatrice up from her crate last night when I got home from work.  I usually rush her right outside to potty as she is always more than ready to go.  Somehow or another she twisted in my arms and flipped over the cast and onto her chin and belly. I tried to catch her but it happened so incredibly quickly.   She seemed okay....I felt all over and she wasn't crying or acting as if she was in any pain.  So I let her go outside.  She usually eats her dinner right after she does her business so she came running in the house.  Still fine.  As she dropped her head to eat her back right leg just gave out on her.  I immediately took her to the vet....fortunately just ten minutes away and she examined her.  By then of course, when her vet put her down she started walking but she was clearly favoring the right leg.  Fortunately it is just a tissue injury (she thinks that she probably hit her hip when she landed) and she has to take a tiny amount of baby aspirin (they make the capsules at the vet with the right dosage for a tiny girl), for three days to help with the inflamation.  She seemed perfect this morning but I am NOT letting her play with the others as she thinks that she can Weiner-Wrestle as well as they do and I'm scared to death that she will re-injure herself.
Needless to say it was a rather long night as I checked on her about every hour!  She also had a tiny cut in her mouth where it looks like her tiny little bottom tooth pushed into her gumline.  Nothing to worry about according to the vet.
I have honestly never felt so horrible.  I can't believe that it happened as I am always so careful about things like that.  So I think my baby girl could use some of those amazing dachsie rays!

OH Terri how awful. I can imagine how terrible you are feeling but it was an accident these things happen to all of us at some time. Not long after I first got Hallie I was getting her out of her crate in the car and she fell straight down and landed on her chin and chest. And I didn't even have a casted arm! (sorry about your arm too casts suck). It sounds like she is going to be just fine and I think you are doing the right thing in not letting her play. Try not to beat yourself up too much over it I'm sure Beatrice has forgiven you long ago.

Good moms always worry about their kids.  One time Dan took the dogs for a ride to the video store to return movies.  When he got home he was lowering Alex down to the ground and Alex jumped when Dan had him at about his knee height.  Well, Alex broke his leg, and talk about someone feeling horrible, especially since Alex didn't particularly want to go-for-a-ride with everyone else.   Accidents happen, and hopefully they make us more careful next time.
Please let us know how Beatrice is doing.

Terri, don't blame yourself. Things like this will happen, no matter how careful we are. The important thing is that Beatrice is fine. I don't think there is anyone on this board that can say something like this hasn't happened to them and their pups. For me, it was when we (my husband,Ron, and I) took both Gretchen and Ilsa with us to the gas station to get gas and ice. The girls did not have car seats at the time. I stayed with them in the car while Ron went to get the ice. When he got back, he opened the driver's side door and Gretchie went tumbling out of an Xterra, clear to the ground. I named the car because this type of SUV sits really high. It all happened so fast, like you said. I saw Gretchie with her little paws in the window, looking out, and the next thing I knew she was tumbling to the ground. I hope my story helps you feel better.

Accidents do happen.  Don't be too hard on yourself.  I once caught Rudy's tail in the door, both breaking it and skinning it.  He was left with a "kink" in his tail for the remainder of his days, and the fur never did grow back...always a constant reminder.

Luckily, soft tissue injuries are usually very easy for a dachsie to recover from and there are no long-term effects.   Typically, my vet would give my puppers some Rimadyl when they had their soft tissue injuries and that turned them around in no time.

Terri, I'm sending 'em right over!  Don't be too hard on yourself.  After a little rest and tiny baby aspirins, she should be as right as rain.  Here comes rays and smooches to Beatrice.....the little snickerdoodle...and a HUG for you.

RAys to you all. Ingrid did a concrete nose dive at about the same age as Beatrice, she was the one that leapt to get to Oliver, like you I died a thousand deaths that night, but she was Ok. I then started to make sureI had her rear feet frimly held  from that time on.
