This is the 2nd time this year that eLlIe has had severe colitis ........ poor baby ... it just wipes her out.
The vet said it could be as simple as something she ate, or stress Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Does anyone else have this problem with their dog ?
Poor baby. What are her symptoms exactly? Hallie has had some tummy problems on and off but vets not been able to diagnose. I had two kitties with IBD though no fun!
You might think I am nuts but, I have colits and I know it is different than a dog but, one thing I can say is when I get stressed I have a flare up and it to wipes me out. I try to watch my diet and not get stressed. Animals are the same way especially the doxies with their tummies. I know this is not the answer you were looking for but, I was so stressed this week till I had a my colits go on the war path.
eLlIe's symptoms were frequent runny poops :eeew: and then foamy spit ups. I called the vet after the first night and got something to calm her stomach, next day was ok, next day was worse with the vomit, so off to the vet we went. Tests showed blood in her poop too, with an infection. One day of meds and Ellie seems ok.
I think it has something to do with stress too ........... I took her to a Halloween Parade on Sunday .... she strutted her stuff in the parade but was afraid during the judging ........ could that have been it ? or the week before was grooming and a butt squeeze .
i hope that she is doing better. Hiopefully the meds will help her. Seems to me all of my daschunds stress out easy they know when I am stressed or do not feel well. Hope life is better for you and your baby... :icon_flower: :icon_flower: :toothy4: :grouphug2:
Poor Ellie !!! Is she feeling better today? Nieither of mine have had a ny real tummy issues - but I think that Cajsa (April) has had a lot of tummy issues. Hopefully she will check in and give you some advice. Smoochies sweet Ellie !

Rudy & Max both had bouts with colitis. Max had it fairly frequently, usually from his scavenging. They were both put on sulfa-type drugs, either Metroazinadole or Sulfaszalamine (sp?). Very powerful stuff that cleared them up quickly. I found the bouts did come in repetitive cycles, usually lasting about six months before they finally cleared up. Max had no bouts of this in the last 3 to 4 years of his life after being plagued by it on and off for many years.
Cajsa has colitis and it is because of food allergies. We had her scoped to figure out why she was having so much trouble. She would lose large (well for her size) amounts of blood in her stool and there was mucous and it was just really bad. She would be wiped out and weak if we left it untreated. Fortunately once we figured out that it was food related (but before the scope) we were able to give her rice with chicken for a few days when we noticed she wasn't acting the same and that her stools were getting soft/runny. We do still keep sucralfate on hand though just in case she gets something she shouldn't since it does give pretty immediate relief.
I tell you all this not to scare you, but to let you know that Cajsa is doing GREAT for the past year (since we found out all her food triggers) and has only had one minor incident and that was because my FIL gave her something with tomato in it by accident. Cajsa's food allergies are pretty severe I think in that she will get runny poops (no blood) if she licks Elf's hand to taste tomato sauce. Tomato is one of her favorite snacks, but unfortunately for her it is also one of the worst offenders for tummy troubles. What I would suggest is that you give something like chicken and rice for a few days without snacks/treats that aren't chicken and rice. Then when her tummy starts feeling better introduce a new food every few days and watch her for a reaction. This unfortunately means no foods with several ingredients. Cajsa and Gretchen are both on a food with relatively few ingredients and are doing well. It is a chicken and rice based food with no tomato or artificial preservatives/coloring/additives. (Cajsa's tummy doesn't tolerate those very well either!) After you've given all the foods on the ingredient list without any problem then that food should be safe to eat.
Your vet is right in that it could also be stress causing the episodes, but if you haven't done anything out of the ordinary or changed the routine I doubt it was stress causing the problems. That's one of the reasons I went off about the foods. It is the most likely culpret in my opinion based on what I know from your posts. Feel free to PM me or send me an email, but I'll try to check in here every day or two.
