Title: Wolf sighting (I think)
Post by: MindyKay on October 25, 2006, 08:07:43 AM
I went home over lunch hour to do my usual thing with Ozzy.  As I was backing out of our driveway on the way back to work, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye.  A very large canine was walking across the street and into our yard.  It was huge, had no collar, and the markings reminded me of a wolf.  Its hair was light-colored, but all over the back and chest the hair tips were grayish-black.  It kept moving through our back yard headed in a northerly direction.

All last night, when I took Ozzy out, I took with us the business end of Ozzy's pooper-scooper with us.  I kept panning the flashlight around, looking for any movement - the neighbors are probably convinced that I am crazy.

I knew there were wolves in Iowa, but I didn't think they would get so close to a populated area.

Good thing that you are very cautious! A couple years ago my Mom and I were coming home late one night and across the road in the corn field we seen some eyes glowing and we guessed it was a coyote.Coyotes in Northern Illinois. When I take my 2 out at night I make sure someone knows it and if I'm not back inside after 10 minutes someone comes checking on me.

That's what i was gonna say.  I  live in nebraska and we get tons of coyotes out here!!   Last year, in our other town, we had a blizzard going on and a coyote wandered right into our front yard and scratched on the front door!!   It was scary, but he was just confused and cold.   At night, where we live now, we can hear them yipping and see their eyes staring back at us. And coyotes are even more skittish than wolves!   It freaks me out!
Don't worry about panning your yard with your flashlight, Better safe than sorry!   And besides, you might have fun making the neighbors think you are the crazy woman.  LOL  Great way to keep pesky neighbors from bugging you.  ha ha   I really hope it wasn't a wolf though. YIKES!!   But, then again, it would be cool to say you saw one too.    :thumb:

They also have half coyote/ feral dogs they are even more scary because some do not have any fear of man but I'm sure you already know that. My mother-in-law use to live on 80 acres in Iowa she had coyotes try to lure her dog out if the dog follows the coyote the pack is up a head then they usually have a dog snack depending on the size of the dog.She even saw a pack of 30 coyote & coyote /dog mixes no one believed he until some good old boys saw the same pack. They had to call in the state game warden to bring in Trappers to trap the pack.Just be extra careful when you take out Ozzy I would not care what the neighbors thought, heck we live in Tulsa in the city we have Fox's living behind our house in a Cement block factory. Few years back we were at the City Park saw a Coyote running though the park to get back to the woods across the street down from the park we were there early in the morning.
Be careful.
