Title: New Dumb Question
Post by: papbouv on October 15, 2006, 10:35:04 PM
Hi everyone have another question read where Doxies like to burrow under covers does that apply to the Long Haired Doxie's too???Here in Tulsa we only have about 3 months of really cold weather was wondering if Patches needs a coat or sweater??? We do sometimes get snow about 6 times in those 3 months. Was thinking of getting a child's sweatshirt from Goodwill for Buddy figured he would eat it maybe plus since he is growing did not want to get him a coat until he was done growing.Buddy is the Doberman so know he needs a coat of some kind. Since Patches is my first Doxie was not sure about her needing a coat or sweater, know she will not get her full coat till she is about 3 years old right???
Thanks for any replies.

Hallie is not a big burrower, she does some but not like some doxies I know (she sleeps on top of the covers at night usually unless it's real cold, and will crawl under the covers and "spoon" with me every morning about an hour before we get up. I think it gets colder then). But she does wear coats on our walks all winter. We walk every day, and it can get pretty nippy here during winter, she has several sets of "long johns"  She only needs her sweater when outside though.

She may grow coat most of her life, my last longhair got longer hair every year until I lost her at age 10, the same is holding true for Hallie, she has gotten longer hair every year so far as well, it just doesn't grow as much each year after the age of about 3-4 (I don't know if this is true for all longhairs).

How are Buddy and Patches getting along?

My two are long hairs, one does Amy, and Oliver hates to be covered. Also had two angel long hairs and again one did and one did'nt, so I'd say its a personal choice by them. None have ever liked coats.

That's a great question.  My two smooth boys both LOVE to burrow.  My long haired girl Buelah doesn't like it at all.  She likes to sleep on top of her snuggly blankets.  It would be kind of interesting to hear how many do and don't like to burrow.

Skeeter (smooth) burrower, Leopold (long) sometimes burrower, Archie and Boone (longs) non-burrowers.  Obviously the longs can tolerate cold better that smooths since they have more hair, but you will just have to wait and see what your dog prefers.

Our smooth red, fritzie loves to burrow. In fact I almost sat on him this am when he had burrowed himself into his grren bankie on the couch. I souldn't see him. Now the new red/dapple smooth mix Ziggy  is not a burrower. He likes to be on top, layed out on his back.

No dumb questions here !!!  It's all about gathering information !!!

My 2 are smooths and both love to burrow - especially my little girl.  I have not had longs - but I would think in the heat of Texas weather - they wouldn't want to burrow !!!

Patches may need a sweater this year if her coat is still short and thin......I would just play it by ear and see how she does!

Thank you one and all the reason I asked is the other morning it was in the 40's I had tried to walk Buddy at the park when I got home put Buddy in the crate went & crawled in my waterbed (husband does not believe in turning on the heat till it is really cold)? So in comes Patches wants on the waterbed it is on 2 sets of drawers so it is tall put her in the bed always worried she will jump off so have pillows on the floor.I raised up the covers and under she went so we took a nap together she was still under the covers when I woke up.At night her crate is 1/4th on the waterbed and the rest of the crate is on the bookcase so she is right next to me but in the crate at night.Well Mr.Buddy got way too friendly with Patches the other evening we were in the back yard I'm still too chicken to turn them loose so I keep Buddy on a Flex Line & pinch collar that way if Patches wants to get away she can she is loose.Buddy is going to the vet 's in the morning to take care of him being too friendly if you know what I mean.He was sold as a pet so it is in the contract to get him fixed but have been reading where you should wait longer till they are grown and the growth plates are fused??? They were saying do them at 6 months old so heck I do not know nothing any more they keep changing things on how you are suppose to care for dogs???I neutered all my Bouviers at 6 months did not hurt them that I know of so Buddy's going in the morning since he already has ideas Patches & Gizmo are too little to be messed with so too bad Buddy. I must have lost my mind having two pups at the same time Buddy will be 6 months old on the 28th and Patches is 10 months old they sure are wearing me out keeping them separated or under close watch all the time. Also getting new carpet so that should help on slidding on the wood floor they are too put it down in the morning I hope it will be good Buddy will be at the vets. Then going to put a book case from my bedroom in the dinning room & put Buddy's crate in my bedroom too hope it will fit. Getting carried away so I thank you one & all for all the great information about coats & sweaters.

Ps: anyone try the new carpet padding for pets?

I have never owned a longhair.  I know that Porky who is a smooth, only wears his sweater outside. It seems to make him irritable if he has to wear it for longer than just going outside and coming back in.  He loves to burrow in blankets even in the 90+ degree weather in the summer.

I agree with Roberta.  i think this is a personal preference thing too.  If you notice them acting cold when you go out, go ahead and buy them a sweater, otherwise, just let them be.   Porky lets me know when he needs his coat. If we go out without it on a cold day he makes a cry different from any of his others, and tries to come back in.  After he gets his sweater on, he goes right out.   I call it his "mom, i'm cold cry."

I haven't tried the carpet padding.  Actually I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about, I guess I've never heard of them.

Gretchen, my longhair, is a definite burrower - even in the summer and we live in Texas. She'll start out under the covers (in the summer), but doesn't last long. She comes out panting and lays on top of the covers. In the winter, she spends hours under there. Ilsa, my wirehair, burrows only when it's cold. Both of mine wear their coats only outside. I think part of the trick is to find a coat that fits them well and is comfortable for them. Ilsa doesn't like stuff like wearing coats or even getting groomed, but she doesn't seem to mind wearing the coat I have for her. Gretchen, on the other hand, thinks she looks so good in anything she wears (and she's a longhair!).
