Title: Out of the mouth of my nephew....awww.
Post by: doxielady5569128 on September 28, 2006, 03:56:45 PM
I was watching my nephew yesterday and we happened to turn on the tv.  Just as we turned it on, we saw a police officer near tears speaking about the school shooting in Colorado that had just happened.   I quickly turned the channel because he is only 4 and I didnt want him to watch anything that would scare him.    About 20 minutes later i could tell he was thinking hard about something.

So...I asked him, "What's wrong buddy?"   He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said...."Well, I member when I watching the crocodile hunter on tv, he cried cause his crocodile died.  And, another time, he cried when his puppy died.  And then today, the cop cried cause he was sad about something.   So...I guess if I wanna be a hero, I better start crying more too."

I was surprised at what he said and not sure what to say to him, so we just hugged.   Later last night, he wanted to draw a picture of Steve Irwin, because he is still sad about what happened.   Then at the bottom, he wanted me to write, "Only heroes cry."   Pretty profound for a little guy!     Melts my heart.

Just wanted to share this story with you all because I thought you might enjoy it.

Aww - you must be a proud aunt!  That is very insightful for a 4-year old.  I have 7- and 8-year olds in my classroom, and I've never heard one of them express it like that!
