Our fritz has never been a butt scooter. Occasionally he has tried to lick his behind but not that often. He goes to the groomer about once a month maybe every two months to get a wash and get his glands expresssed. But sometimes he will be sleeping in my lap when the most ungodly fish odor arrives. Yeech, he will occasionally wake up and lick the area where his anal region was resting. Is this a problem? Should we be getting his glands expressed more often? How often is too often? He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, it also doesn't happen every day, just maybe every week completely out of the blue! Anyone else have this issue?
Our little guys seem to have problems with anal glands. The last thing you want is for one to become absessed. Some vets will show you how to express them yourself (sounds yucky but it sure can save some money and stress on your little doxie from going to the vet all the time). There is a great article in Whole Dog Journal about anal glands this month. They have some tips on what to add to your dog's diet to help the glands empty naturally. Some of the things they recomend include more roughage like raw vegies, a prune a day, or coconut oil. There's a lot more specific instructions in the article so you might want to take a look at it. Whole Dog Journal is sold in a lot of pet stores. I hope this help. My little Maisie is a scooter too!
