Title: Porky here: I gots a big headache!!
Post by: doxielady5569128 on September 21, 2006, 04:20:43 PM
Hey guys- guess what?!  I was pwaying today and got to running round the house like i usually do.   I got running faster den ever and decided to run towards the front door.  Once I got outta da living room and hit that linoleum florr momma yelled, " STOP!"   It twied weal hard to stop but da floor was wet and i went slip sliding all the way down da hall!   And "SMACK"  right into the front door, headfirst!

Next fing I member is da vet telling me to settle down and giving me dis nasty medicine, right down the froat!   And den i looked up and saw momma looking all worried.  I dont know why dey made such a big deal about me taking a nap!  :dontknow:  Now I'm at home and momma keeps waking me up, she wont let me sleep!! :cussing:  I been weal gwochy since i got home and even tried to bite momma when she woke me up.  She says i have to wait till tomorrow to get a good sleep, I can only have little naps.   And my darn head hurts.

So I guess my advice for today is....NEVER RUN ON A WET FLOOR!!!   :doah:  It gives you some kinda bad owie that makes you have to go to da vet and take icky medicine.

Goodness Porky you get yourself into more trouble! I'm glad you are OK. Can you ask your Mom what meds the vet gave you for a bump on the head, and what she said to do for you after you got home? I don't think I ever knew a dog who knocked himself clear out that must have been scary for both of you! Hopefully you can get some more rest tomorrow!

Poor little guy! You sound like quite a stinker.  Hope you get to feeling better soon!

I recently put in hardwood floors and Berman and Lucy are still getting used to them.  They start running so fast and I am just waiting for the CRASH when they run into a door or wall or something!

Thankfully Porky is doing just fine now.  When we went to the vet, they said he had a mild concussion and just gave him a very small dose of baby asprin to help with his pain.  he hated the taste though.  They told me to keep giving him some asprin once every 12 hours till the next morning.   They also told me to treat it like a human concussion and keep him awake as much as possible and ice it every couple of minutes.  ( HE hated that!!)  He was feeling back to himself the next morning, and my hubby and i had some shopping to do in a city about 2 hours from home.   We didnt feel comfortable leaving him at home alone, so we took Porky along.   He even got a new sweater.  he still has a little bump on his head, but is back to running around and causing mischief.

Question:  Where can I find some sweaters for Porky that will fit him better than Petco's?   Are there any that are made specifically for doxies?  If I get the smallest size of sweater for Porky at Petco it is too tight in the chest.    If I get the next size up, it is a little too big in the legs, but fits his chest perfect.   The problem is, when its too big in the legs, he runs and gets his legs caught inside the sweater and falls face first onto to the ground.   We might custom make him a sweater so we are sure it fits. Thanks for all your concerns about his head bump!   He will be just fine now.  Luckilly, he didnt knock out any teeth when he hit his head.  his mouth bled like crazy so i was sure he did, but thankfully the vet said his teeth are just fine!

I don't mean to sound like I know more than your vet but my understanding is you should never give aspirin with a concussion, it thins the blood and could increase the risk of bleeding in the brain. It sounds like Porky had a pretty bad one, especially since he still has a lump on his head and he was bleeding a lot from his mouth, I could be wrong but maybe you better check with another vet just to be sure the aspirin is safe for him? He has sure been through a lot the last several weeks! Maybe you should change his name to Baby Huey.  :thumb: I'm glad he is feeling better.

Boy Porky I think your Mom maybe should look into a helmet and wrap you in Charmin you sure get into allot of trouble and you are how old. Your Mom needs pet insurance too will help with all your vet bills sure hope your head feels better soon the ice should have felt good.My Mom got a catalog called Dachshund Delights you can also go to Dachshund Delights.com they have a web site, also you can type in Sweater for a Dachshund in your search engine bet you can find one that way. Also if you do not want to use your credit card information on your computer the web site usually has a 1-800 number and call by phone to place an order.I do not put any credit card information on my computer any longer too chicken.
Hope you can find Porky a sweater,a helmet and you can always find Charmin at the store.

Dee Dee,
I was actually wondering about the asprin thing too.  I did not give him any after the vet did.  He seemed not to be in too much pain or anything so I just cuddled him and iced his head.  We will be switching vets after this not only because of the asprin thing, but because they seemed like they thought I was overreacitng by bringing him.  Which i didn't understand since he was bleeding and had a HUGE bump on his head and it had only been 10 minutes!   I really felt like they were uncaring when we took him in.

Patches mom,
LOL  I love your helmet and Charmin idea!!  We could definately use those!!  Thanks for the website for sweaters!!  I really appraciate it.

I am just so happy he is ok now!   We are going in for a follow up check up with a family friend who is a vet and offered to check him for free on Monday.  he even wants to give Porky some x rays of his head just to double check the work of the other vet.  He came and looked at Porky in our home today and said he seems just fine.

Never feel bad about checking out a head injury sounds like you need a different vet if they thought you were out of line for bringing Porky in. Was Porky unconscious at all concussions can be dangerous if not checked out. Your vet does not sound interested in his patients at all so if I were you I would not let Porky see the jerk again usually there are caring vets around that would love Porky.

Yes, Porky did lose conciousness for a few seconds when he hit his head.  He did get up on his own afterwards because i did not want to move him until he was ready for fear of injuring him worse.   Since Porky hit his head so hard, we put our plans for next weekend on hold till next year.  We would rather keep his activities at a bare minimum untol we are positive he is fully recovered.   We think it will take him a few weeks to be back to 100 percent.  We can tell he feels much better, but his head and jaw are still tender to the touch.  He is also pretty sleepy from it, but we have gotten the ok to let him sleep as much as he wants from a vet that we trust more than the one he originally saw.   I am just so thankful that he is doing ok.  It could have been much worse.

Next saturday, Porky was supposed to compete in a weiner dog race.  Before I get nasty messages about how bad racing them is, i'll explain.  The race is just for fun, the dogs safety is the Top priority of the race, and each dog that finishes whether they win or lose gets at least one dog treat and toy as a prize.  Unlike last year when they held this race, they will have the racing area fully enclosed to prevent asny dogs from veering off the track and away from their owners.  Also the race is not that long.  We are disappointed that we can't participate this year since the organizers of the race listened to our safety concerns from last year. (which we did not participate in)   Also we had made Porky quite a cute costume to use in the costume contest.    Oh well, we'll have to try again next year.  The organizers have kindly returned our entry fee and sent cards for Porky wishing him well which i thought was quite nice.  (he has received 15 cards from the organizers and some of the other participants)  I had called them and told them about Porky's accident on Thursday morning, so their response was quick!!
