Title: My mom has breast cancer
Post by: Beth on August 26, 2006, 07:46:59 PM
I just found out last night when my mom called me with the news.  She has Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS).  It is a type of cancer that is found in the milk duct of the breast, and it is non-invasive, so it will not spread to other areas of the breast.  Her doctor told her that this is a good diagnosis if you have to be diagnosed with a breast cancer.  She's meeting with a surgeon next week to see what steps to take next.  Most likely she will have a lumpectomy, and then they will determine if any further treatment is needed.  The reasearch I have done on DCIS says that it is not life threatening, but there is a 25% to 50% chance that the DCIS can return as an invasive cancer.  My mom is optimistic about her diagnosis and treatment, so that makes me feel better.  Still, it is quite unnerving to hear and think about my mom having breast cancer.  Any rays and prayers you can send her way would be greatly appreciated by me.

Thanks,
Beth

   and rays on the way!  It sounds like an easily remedied fix, and that and no recurrence - I'm all over that!

Mega rays coming out from Wisconsin for your Mom, Beth.  My heart goes out to you too - even though its the "best case scenario" of a bad situation, I'm sure you will all be on pins and needles until you get the successful outcome you need.  I will join you in your positive thinking campaign - it WILL be okay, because we all say it WILL.

I'm sorry to hear that Beth.  I'm glad her prognosis is good though.  How is she doing now?  How are you coping too?  Breast Cancer runs in my family and we have many women who have survived it and have many years of remission under their belts.  I pray your mother gets rid of this cancer with surgery and never sees it return!

Wow!!  i really am hoping for the best for your mom!  i'm sorry I didnt see your post earlier.  I'll keep your family in my prayers since it will affect all of you in some way.   My great aunt was diagnosed with the same type of breast cancer and came out just fine a few months later.   I really am hoping all will be well for your mom soon!!!    And i pray that once its gone, it stays away!!
Title: Update on my mom
Post by: Beth on September 29, 2006, 06:37:39 PM
Sorry I haven't been around.  Here's an update on my mom.  Everything went very well.  My mom had the surgery, and they were able to remove everything, plus some surrounding tissue.  When they sent all that to the pathology lab, it all came back as being negative for cancer cells, so that means that the cancer did not spread.  That's what we were hoping for!  My mom now has to do radiation 5 days a week for 5 weeks.  So that should pretty much take care of everything.  Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers.  It means so much!
