Title: Hi from Down Under (depending on your point of view)
Post by: Bolshieoz on August 22, 2006, 05:42:43 AM
Hi all,
Great to find a board devoted to Dachies. I may be here under false pretences as we don't actually have an owner at the moment. We lost Toby, our beloved mini-longhaired guy a month ago to IVDD at age 9. We're still coming to terms with our loss and trying to get used to not seeing that clever face or hearing a barked welcome home each day.
We're not ready yet to bring another Dachie into our lives. We will, no question, but we need to let the pain ease and learn more about the breed. We made some mistakes with Toby and let him do things Dachies shouldn't do. We didn't realise until it was too late and the damage was done. The best way we can honour Toby's memory is by giving another Dachshund a loving home and by learning from any mistakes we made. Doesn't help poor Tobes much, but the idea of living without a Dachie to share our lives with is out of the question. So here I am, hoping to learn a lot and perhaps share in your puppies' lives and yours until we find a new owner.

hello from another downunderer. We live in Melbourne, checked your info your in Adelaide, but if you are in Melbourne please come and cuddle one.
This is a great board, and the dogs love it to.  Angel Toby is gorgeous, most of us on this board have lost one or two, just take your time and grieve, and we are hear to listen, as we all know some people out there don't ever realise what these guys are.

Thanks for that Penny and Roberta.
I can well understand the addiction to Dachsies. Once you've been loved by one, no other breed has quite the same charm. Strangely, those who've never owned a Dachsie can't see the attraction (in my experience). They just don't know what theyre missing out on.
Toby will always have a special place in our hearts, being our first, but we plan to find another puppy in about a year's time, followed by another after about six months to keep him/her company. I only know of one local breeder here in Adelaide, who only breeds smoothies. We'll be looking for a longhair mini (probably) so we'll be looking interstate for a good breeder. In the meantime, we'll learn as much as we can from you folks and enjoy our memories of Toby. He still makes me smile every time I see his photo.

Welcome to the board !  I am so sorry for your loss - Toby Angel is gorgeous.  We have a lot of caring knowledgeable people here - feel free to ask questions - there is generally someone who has experienced what you are looking for answers for.   When you are ready to give your heart away again, you will know it.  Toby will look down on his family and watch over.  These furkids take your heart and hang on, don't they?  I am owned by Rudy and Brandy, both black and tan smoothies, both rescues.  We live n HOT Texas !   Look forward to hearing from you -
Barb

Thanks Barb,
I've always loved dogs of all kinds, but Toby showed us the ideal breed. He was a very typical Dachsie which made him irresistable. We can't take any credit for what he was, that goes to all the breeders who worked hard to produce the breed we love.
It gets pretty warm here in Adelaide as well. Not as hot as Texas, but 110 degrees is not uncommon in summer and it rarely gets colder than about 30 degrees in winter. We almost never see snow, so it's a pretty milde climate. Austin is actually a sister city to Adelaide, so there's a connection there.
Thanks for your kind thoughts. Give your owners a cuddle for me.  :2funny:
Regards Steve
