Title: Hurricane Katrina
Post by: Beth on August 28, 2005, 09:50:23 AM
I just saw on the news that Hurricane Katrina has been upgraded to a Category 5.  I hope that anybody in its path can get to a safe place!

I am trying to send some sun shinny weather down there!  I have an ex-father in law, near New Orleans, He is on a plane to come up here!  From the looks of our member map not many of us are in harms way!  I am praying for the folks down there and hope all the people and animals are ok! :toothy2: :toothy2: :toothy2: :toothy2:

We have a place in the Outter Banks, of NC......My ex lives in Maneto, he grew up there!  We were there last year for a cat 2, Hurricane Alex, Aug. 3, 2004......  Here is a picture of me on the beach, wind was about 50 sustained when we took the picture!  Eye stayed 5 miles offshore, we got a glancing blow, wouldn't want to be in a cat. 5!

Living just north of 'Hurricane Alley' I can sympathize ... I do hope the storm weakens some as it nears land as cat. 5 will cause some serious damage.  We went through Isobel 2 yrs ago ... over a week without power/water/ or phone and lots of tree damage I believe that was a strong 2 or weak 3 when it hit just south of us. Cat. 5 is serious business sending rays of sun to the west!!  :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

I live about 100 miles north of gulfport. The eye is predicted to come over us tuesday morning. We do have inland hurricane warnings out. I think we will be okay. Just a lot of rain and wind. Just hope the lights dont go out.
Wish us luck

I hope everything goes well for you.

I think this storm is going to be a major, major event, even once it loses its punch, it will still have a lot of rain.  It looks like it's going to go straight up the Mississippi.  We've got family in Louisville, KY, and I'm definitely concerned about possible flooding there.   This one is being compared to Camille in 1969...many of the deaths in that storm were in Virginia, hundreds of miles from Louisiana, from the rains.

It looks like the D.C. area might get brushed by the storm, but it probably won't be any worse than a regular rain storm where we are.

I heard on the radio that it was supposed to be a tropical storm strength when it reached KY and tropical depression when it reached Canada.  I'm kind of hoping they are wrong about that and it loses strength  more quickly.

Leah and lucylu, you stay safe!  I just saw on the news that it's now a Category 2...losing strength as it comes inland, but still strong.  They said that Katrina might beat out Andrew as the hurricane causing the most financial damage.  Prayers and rays to everyone in its path!

Katrina is right on top of us as I write this. We have wind gust up to 70mph. Lucy just went outside to potty. She was not too happy about it but insisted on going out. She did her business and ran right back in.
We were without lights for 2 hours. The light company came right away to remove a tree limb on lines. The lights went out just as I turned the oven on to cook supper.
The worst is just about over, but look for lots of rain overnight, weather man is predicting 15 inches. Flash Flood Warnings
Keep us in your prayers
