Berman woke up at around midnight last night coughing and hacking. He would cough maybe 2 or 3 times then give a big hack. This went on for about 2-2 1/2 hours. He wasn't coughing anything up (that I could tell). He was able to drink water fine and was trying to play in between episodes. I noticed he sounded a little weezy too.
This morning he woke up and was fine - he was able to eat and there was no coughing. I have no idea what last night was about - maybe he had some polyfill stuck in his throat or something. I just felt really helpless and wasn't sure what I couldn've done. Is there anything over the counter I could've given him or maybe some warm broth or something?
Is he around other dogs much? I'm wondering if he has a touch of kennel cough. Although I don't know if it would come and go like that....?
No - he's only around Lucy and she didn't have any problems. It sounded like maybe he just had a tickle in his throat.
I wonder then if he might have gotten a little water down the wrong pipe, or like you said just a little something caught in his throat then. Hopefully you won't see signs of it again! :thumb:
I don't have to tell any dachshund owner that a dachshund will attempt to ingest ANYTHING. Sometimes it goes down and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes things partly go down and leave residue (hair, popcorn hulls, bark, feathers, who knows what all) that doesn't quite make it. Then ensues a period of hacking and gacking.
Now the observant dachshund owner will notice that there is an audible difference between a reverse sneeze (hwup, hwup, hwup, hwup), a "productive" gack; one that will leave unpleasant stuff on the floor (ahwhulp, ahwhulp, AHWHULP, GAAAAAAAAAACK) and a "scrud in the throat" episode (hwuck, hwuck, hwuck, AAAAAACK) which usually does not produce any surprise substance to step in.
Seriously, I think the key is, how long does it last. 2 - 2 1/2 hours is a pretty good stretch, but I've had mine do this periodically throughout an evening and then show no further symptoms. I think they get stuff stuck in their throat and this is the way they clear it. If it ever lasted into a second day, I'd be off to the vet.
Thanks, Rich! I LOVE your descriptions of the oh so pleasant sounds that our furbabies can generate! I think Berman's was a "scrud in the throat"!
ROTFL! Rich that needs to be in a book....you have me rolling! :chairfall:
Rich just wish we had sound, or maybe I don't come to think of it.
Rich - crack me up !!! I am saying these over in my mind.....yup - heard them all !!!
Glad Berman is doing ok !!!!
Last night Lucy had a "productive gack". I swear, if it's not one, it's the other!
The dachshund attitude seems to be "If it doesn't move, eat it - if its not good I can always get rid of it later."

So True...So True. We have been having a problem with Penny and the Kleenex. She got into the downstairs bath (we usually keep the door closed, but sometimes forget :BangHead:) and tore up/ate some tissue on Tuesday. Yesterday she had Kleenex poop! Yuck! I had to help her a little :verdict: - she was having a hard time getting it out... Sigh...the life of a doxie mom.
Porky here: My philosophy is if it moves kill it, and then eat it when it stops moving. I like to eat dem bugs!!! 'specially dose beetles. mmm...
Anyway...glad Berman is doing better. I do that hacking fig sometimes too, but neber all night. Poor guy, his tummy musta hurted after all that. And I lub dose sounds Rich said. He has weally been studying dem I can tell. I do the backwards sneeze on a wegular basis cause my alwergies.

I often say, I talk to myself, because no one else listens!
