Title: BAD DOGS!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Etta21 on August 14, 2006, 01:41:43 PM
I dont know what it is but Bishop when he was by himself or even with Flaca he NEVER chewed or should I say shredded his bed but since we got Lainey I have gone thru TWO not so cheap beds  :cussing: AAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!! I am so POed at them I guess I shouldnt complain too much at least they are potty trained. And its not like they dont have tons of toys, I am not buying them anymore beds at least for a long time (long after we get our two EC pups). The bed that they chewed up first was the one I just bought right before I picked up Lainey and the other one Bishop has had since he was a little pup. They only do it when they are home by themselves and I make sure i leave them with plenty of all types of toys. I dont want to have to crate them b/c the area that they are in isnt huge. I guess they just wont get any beds to lay on. they are just the normal round dog beds like the donut kind with the cussion. Anyone have problems with bed shredders?

OH No!!!! That is so frustrating when they do that!!   Porky shreds beds, toys, and anything else he can get his paws on!  I had to stop buying him beds as well.  We also have to keep him crated when we are gone or have a friend watch him.  Even with crating him, he still shreds things inside his crate.  I put blankets and toys in with him, so he doesn't get quite so bored.  But, he shreds his toys and chews holes in the blankets.  I dont really have any advice to give.

Just wanted to let you know, you aren't alone.  My dog does it too.  He never used to be so naughty until we moved.  I think the extra stress by changes is what is causing that behavior.  I guess we'll just have to wait it out.  Maybe we'll get lucky and catch them in the act so we can scold them and they know what we're talking about.  Good Luck!!!!  Also, maybe if they have no comfy beds they will figure it out.

How does a dog know the difference between a bed and a toy? A bed is just a big toy you can lay on. And what dachshund doesn't want to shred their toys? The two I have now are not shredders, but I've had some championship shredders in the past. I do think that it is more common with multiple dogs. It's like the single dog will not get into as much as when he has some encouragement/competition.  On the other hand it looks like Porky is a lone shredder.

The only bed and blankie ripper we had was Emma, the rest are just toy destroyers, bar Amy who gaurds her array of mousies. Emma once ate yes ATE about a third of a sheep skin we had got her to lie on, pulled a two inch hole out o a plush pile carpet, curtains, crutches from any (clean) clothes. Once with Angus and Emma we came in the front door to find the cushions off the formal lounge all over the place (killed) about half were destuffed and a large bunch of dried roses, in shreds and two faces with angelic eyes saying "don't know how this happened"
We just leave pads down for them near the door. I do agree one eggs the other on.

Bishop is a meticulous shredder he leaves no face, arm, leg, belly (you get the picture) intact there are always pieces of fluff/ animal everywhere but never has he gone so "phycso" on his bed before. I know Lainey is all the encouragement Bishop needs, I swear she is not the puppy I picked out lol when I visited her from the time she was three weeks old she was always the quiet and clam one but now MAN has she flipped the script. Bishop is a "You cant have it and if you try to touch it i will take it and break it and make you never want it again!" And if it has a squeaker it is as good as dead, destuffed and definitely desqueaked. At least the beds don't have holes in the covers they are just "missing" the foam core. I don't care about the beds as much as I care about their bellies. Anyone know of a non destructable bed? Or are they just going to have nothing soft and comfy (they have a little area rug right now that they have tore the corners it was cheap and easily replaced) to sleep on while they are home by themselves?

It does sound like extra stress for Porky or maybe it is a boy thing? Good Luck to you too! I think another factor with Lainey is she is teething she has lost two of her front teeth I want to find those edible "Chilly Bones" I just cant find them anywhere.

I found a chilly bone for Porky at Petco.  It was the stuffed one, but he never chewed hard enough to rip it open.  It helped a lot when he was a baby.  I definately think its stress for Porky.  My brother's dachshund, Bandit, also shreds, so maybe it is a boy thing...

I agree with Rich, a beddie is one big glorious doxie toy!!  Hallie is not a shredder, that is why she has 73 toys (at last count) all in perfect condition LOL. She loves each and every one and they all have names..she grabs them and squeek squeek squeeks them and shakes them but she's never chewed or ripped on them. She's never chewed on her beds either but she did jump into an $80 donut bed at a pet store when she was about 2 and when I tried to get her to come out she just sat there and reached one paw straight up in the air at me. I kept calling her so she then sat up and reached her paws up....so of course I had to buy it for her.

Have you tried some of those cushion beds they make that are pretty doggie proof? THey don't look as comfy but maybe better than nothing? I think I saw them at Dr's Foster and Smith...

I will look into them I totally forgot about those. They dont rip holes in the actual cover but the "open" the zipper to get to the cushion. I should just make them b/c I have a TON of thick blue cordoroy just sitting in my closet. Luckily I wasnt the one home who got to clean up the mess hehehehehehehe that was all my Hubby  :2funny: I guess i shouldnt complain to much at least they dont chew on my stuff.

Have you thought about just giving them blankies for a bed.  Cocoa and Patches have a stack of fleece blankies.  Easy to wash and quite warm.  They are all over the house.

QuoteThey dont rip holes in the actual cover but the "open" the zipper to get to the cushion.

They make beds with a "hidden" zipper which might work...... or you could try sewing a flap of fabric over the end where the zipper is when closed.  It might work if its large enough to cover the zipper but small enough that you can get to it if you fold the flap over.
Personally, I have given up hope because Delilah is the queen of destruction :princess:.  Ive had every natural and man-made fiber in existence shredded in my kitchen for years.  Including the specially made memory foam bed and the $100 orthopaedic mattress.  Now I just buy the "cheap" beds and keep my sewing machine on the ready.  I toss them every few weeks when they are beyond repair and start over again.
Good Luck!!

My first dachsie, Dixie was a horrendous chewer.  No bed was safe UNITL....we purchased from Home Depot a hard plastic low tub-like bed.  It was really a trough you mix cement in.  It was low enough for Dixie to get in and out of but completely indestructable.  I highly recommend one for the chewing obsessed.  My Maddie, we have determined, was weaned too early.  That's why at 8 years old she still chews holes in blankies and quilts. Hope you find a solution.

I have two little monsters Champ and Smokey. Champ can shred a bed, toy, stuffed animal faster than anything I have seen.  I bought a bed that appeared to be stronger than most so I thought it might last longer than 5 minutes.  It only lasted 3.  My husband suggested that I put all of his things in something strong like denim or steel mesh.  In February I bought 10 yards of heavy duty denim.  I covered the beds I covered the toys and I covered the plastic squeakys.  All of the above items have lasted until now with minimal wear.  The denim is loose enough over the toys and bed that he cannot get a good grip with his teeth and feet.  I just made square envelopes of denim and put the stuff in them.  I took all of the old beds (three) and the shredded foam and stuffing and put them in a large denim envelope.  I have only sewn one toy closed since then (it had soooooo many squeakys in it that Champ was like a dog on a mission with it "MUST KILL SQUEAK")
