Never had a Doxie before but Patches is 7months old and sleeps about 22 hours a day maybe twice in one week she only sleeps 20 hours she does not play very often maybe 10 minutes at a time. Example: Patches slept all night was out in the yard from about 7:00am till about 9:00am ate breakfast went to sleep, followed me from room to room always laying down to go back to sleep.Husband gets home from work Patches greets him goes back to sleep about an hour later husband picks up squeaky toy squeaks it at Patches she just opens one eye and looks at him goes back to sleep???Finely after he squeaks to toy about 2-3 minutes she goes over and plays about 5 minutes and goes back to sleep. I think this is odd behavior for a puppy, she still does not bark when some one comes to the door either??? She has been checked out by the vet they do not find anything wrong with her. Can a Doxie be that laid back????

Yes, unusual in a puppy of seven months, but it is possible. Then again, sometimes puppies need their sleep! I had one who would play fetch with his tennis ball for half an hour, and then he'd be so tired he'd have to crawl to the water dish we kept outside for him. He'd rest for about 3-5 minutes, and start nagging to play again! If yours is sleeping this much, and not barking, I think this is a very laid-back dachsie - enjoy!
Some are not barkers, Emma our first loved to sleep. If your worried get the vet to check her out.

Simson is that laid-back and always was since he was a puppy. He sleeps about 22/24.
Oscy has always been a sleepy boy. Even as a pup he required a great deal of rest. I agree with everyone else though, if your concerned you might want to speak with your vet.
I also have noticed that all three of mine sleep more when it is very hot and humid.
If it was up to my girl Brandy- she would sleep 23 hrs and 30 minutes a day - leaving 30 minutes to eat !!! LOL - she is a snoozy girl. I agree with Terri - when it is hot they tend to sleep more. See how Patches does when it cools off - he may pick up some energy. OR he may just be a sleepy boy !
Porky slept a lot when he was a puppy until about 8 or 9 months old. He would sleep about 20 hours every day. He did play, but mostly was happy to sleep on my lap most of the day.
If you feel its not normal, maybe have her blood levels checked to make sure she is not anemic or anything like that.
Hi there,
If one of my puppy owners called me with the concerns you are having I would urge them to take the dog to the vet and get everything checked out.... bloodwork might be in order.
My puppies are generally very active starting at about 4 mos. they will have peroids of VERY active play then what I call 'power puppy naps' after that its full speed ahead again. It is possible that you puppy might just be lazy but I too would be concerned.

Thanks for all the input about Patches sleeping so much may call the vet and talk to them last time she was in she was fine has not been that long ago she was in to see the vet.
While I have your thoughts have something weird going on with my 13 year old Papillon Gizmo too, know Gizzy's not a Dachie but some one may have heard someone with this odd problem. Gizmo is mostly all white has brown on her head & ears she has had skin problems off & on about the last 5 years Doggy Dermatologist about 2 years ago said she had a skin infection. I can pretty much keep her in check by giving her a bath in anti biotic shampoo once a week. Now for the new part the end of her tail is turning black she has had pink skin all of her life. Papillon's are single coated dogs have no undercoat, so took Gizzy to her vet she has been going too all of her life he does not know why the tip of he rtail is turning black. He says it feels warm to him and just watch it he is not sure if it will fall off or not. Also Papillon's carry their tails over there backs Gizzy has not had her tail over her back in about a week or longer.???
If any one has any ideas be glad to hear them yes she has been to the VET he just does not know why???
Patches Mom
I know my sisters Pappions drag their tails when they are tired or not feeling to good, maybe gizzy has a allergy, or it could be just an age thing.
hugs to you all

Does she seem happy and healthy other than the tail? Any itching?? Possibly food allergies. I had a dachshund that lost all the hair at the end of his tail and on the tips of his ears (it turned black) and got really dry and flaky.... turned out he had a grain allergy we put him on California Natural and within a week he was a different dog :)
Good Luck

Thanks for the input on Gizmo not sure about a food allergy the only food she will eat is Chicken Prairie she has been a very persnickety little dog all of her life not sure but she has Esophageal Reflux Disease almost died several time's when she was a puppy. At about 1 year of age she had surgery on her Pyloric valve which did help her.She sometimes goes 3 days with out eating just about when I'm ready to take her to the vet she starts eating again plus she spits up white foam during these 3 days usually give her some Pepto seems to help some, or Maalox seems to help also.
Noticed some of you give your dogs Benadryle for allergies when I took Gizmo to the Dog Dermatologist she said I could give Gizmo a 1/2 of the new Claritin she said not to use the D one just the original one.Since the over the counter price is quite expensive I used the store name brand seemed to help better than the Benadryle.Gizmo weighs 7#Oz.
