Title: Pet Treats Recalled-Salmonella
Post by: Jen on August 27, 2005, 12:35:28 PM
This came through one of my lists this morning thought it would be worth passing on ....

Dogfolks,

Here's a list of some recently recalled pet treats. You might want
to check your shelves. Products are: Salmon Snackers (dog and cat);
Shrimp Snackers (dog and cat); Healthy K9 Beef Jerky and Healthy K9
Beef Heart. This is being done following reports of salmonella
infections in humans, which were linked to direct contact with the
treats. The raw material supplier is T.W. Enterprises of Ferndale,
Washington, and it appears that both the FDA and the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency have been consulted in the recall. Also Aron Pet
Food, Abbortsford, BC, has distributed the treats under it's own
label.

It seems that animals are better able to tolerate salmonella
bacteria than humans; they may be infected but not get sick, which
increases the risk of spreading the bacteria.  Consumers who have
these treats are being told not to feed them to their pets and to
dispose of them in a securely covered trash receptacle. Those
experiending symptoms of salmonella infection should seek medical
attention, and report the illness and use of the product to the
appropriate health agency. In healthy adults, salmonella causes
short-term symptoms, such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea,
diarrhea, and may be linked to arthritis over the long term.
Infection can be more serious in children and frail or elderly
people.

Just passing this along.....it is based on an article by Andrew
Perkins, written as a Special to Pet Product News, August 2005.

Dogfolks,

Here are some other treats that have been added to the recall list:

Healthy K9 Original Beef Chew
Health K9 100% Natural Beef Liver Dog Treats
Healthy K9 100% Natural Veal Chew Dog treats
Healthy K9 100% Natural Beef Tripe

Also T. W. Enterprises ships the following bulk products to
distributors in boxes with these labels; Healthy K9 Beef Jerky and
Healthy K9 Beef Liver. These are 1 lb boxes.

I do not wish to alarm anyone unnecessarily, but if you have any of
these products in your home, I would dispose of them immediately.
