I am really concerned about a rash Porky has developed in the armpits of his front legs and on his chest. I am thinking it could be one of three things. It could be heat rash because it was 107 here today. Or it could be rug burn since he has a habit of rubbing his chest on the carpet when he stretches. Or it could be allergies. It is really bright red, and kind of splotchy. It seems the worst in his armpits which is why I am leaning more towards heat rash or allergies. It also is hot to the touch and really seems to bother him.
Any advice about what I shoud do would be very helpful. Poor Porky is downright miserable. Also, because of his allergies, his ears are really bothering him also. Is there any cream I can put on his rash or anything I can do for itchy ears? I had hime checked for ear mites because he was scratching at his ears so much. The vet his ears are very clean and that she suspected it was allergies causing the problem. Any ideas for that would be helpful too!! Thanks in advance for your help.
Penny had an allergy problem last year and they vet had us give her Benadryl. You might ask them about giving it to Porky. It really helped Penny. Hope he gets to feeling better soon!
I would definatly get in touch with your vet. You sure don't want him to rub himself raw. Ray to Porky !
I agree that you should get in touch with your vet. Also, if Porky is doing a lot of swimming you want to be sure to really dry his ears well when he gets out. It's really easy for them to develop ear infections if any water is left in the ear canal.
Let us know what the vet says. Poor baby!
After reading Porky's Fishin' story ...... (http://www.millan.net/minimations/toolminis/happyfish.gif) (http://www.millan.net) ... maybe he has something like "smimmers itch" ?????
The vet said the rash was from allergies. Porky spent the night at the vet so they could test him for different allergies. They found out he wasn't allergic to anything outside except maybe some weeds. That left us scratching our heads trying to figure out what it was.
This morning, the little girl I babysat on saturday said, "Porky sure liked that cheeses I dropped on the floor. when can I come give him more?" Cheese and milk have made Porky get an upset stomach in the past, so I have avoided giving him any. I called the vet and told her about Porky eating some cheese and then we found out Porky is allergic to cheese and milk products. Mystery solved.
The vet also told me they gave him some benedryl for his sneezing and a bath in some medicated shampoo for the rash. Porky is home now and the rash is almost all gone. It stayed red longer than most allergy rashes because Porky had been licking and scratching at it. I am so glad he is feeling better!!
Good to hear Porky is feeling better. I was going to suggest Aveeno oatmeal bath. It sure made my chicken pox (at age 45!!!!) feel much better.
Our last little daxie, Hoover had a reocurring red rash mostly on his chest and a bit under his from legs. We spent a fortune on creams from the vet etc to try to help. He always wanted to lick the cream so I had to make him a little t-shirt wardrobe that he wore so he wouldn't lick it off. Nothing seemed to really help, maybe keep it a bit at bay. I checked out the website and found out that daxies can get eczema and I think that could be what it was.
Definately see your vet and check it out.
