Forgive me if this is a topic already, please direct me to it if there is.....
All the doggies I've had in my past have lived on store bought dog food and treats and an occasional bone from the scraps.
HOWEVER, my two little weiners are so hooman-like they love little raw baby carrots, fruit coctail from the can, and now I see a fav on here is eggies? yup, they love em too!! A little pice of the toast that goes with it? nope not so much, Ginger readily took it thinking it was more eggies, she gave me the "what a dirty trick" look and spit it out.
what other hooman food is healthy for them?
These little doxies are so different than the poodle, husky, terrier pets(which were great pets, too :thumb:) I was familiar with, I just love them so much.
Dachsies are hounds and will eat pretty much anything based on my experience anyway. Chocolate and onions should be avoided in all dogs and unless there are allergies are involved most everything else is safe. I wouldn't give them lots of sugary treats, but that's not good for anyone. carrots, tomatoes, eggs, lettuce, fruits (but not grapes or raisins) are all good treats. There is some debate about garlic, so it might be smart to be careful about that.
Sounds like great choices and great advice. My "kids" also love green beans (frozen) and plain yogurt mixed with eggies or in their kibble. We give apple slices, carrots, green beans and "egg-beater" eggs to the dynamic duo. Trying to kep the weight down so they don't turn into pot-bellied pigs. :grin:
Penny will eat anything...and I mean anything! She really loves carrots and green beans!
Dolly and Maddie here. BRING ON DA BWOKLI!! Dat's our favowite tweet. Baby cawwots are otay, but bwokli is da BEST. We also love marrow bones, bully stix and just about anything else. We don't like muchwooms and maders. Dolly loves coffee (she gets to lick out mommy and papa's mugs in the mornings....just a drop of real coffee in there. Too much makes her hyper.) Mommy and papa have eggies almost every morning and mommy likes hers wiff soft yolkies so we get to lick her plate afterwards. Papa puts hallie penyo sauce on his eggie so we don't get his plate. Sometimes if mommy and papa have cereal for bweakfast, we get da leftover milk. Mommy says we're getting "kitty cat milk." Hrrrrumph. We thinks it's DOGGY milk. Kitty cats.....hrrrrrumph.
The ones I have had liked anything I would give them - I even had one who liked raw cabbage sprinkled with a bit of lemon juice! Definitely avoid onions, chocolate, and grapes, and don't feed too many helpings of potato or tomato - I hear those cause some kind of blood troubles. Brekke loves scrambled eggies, cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, cereal ( without any corn or corn glutens - many dachsies are allergic!), orange juice, and apples. She loves to eat a bite of my cinnamon toast crust now and then. A spoonful of cold mashed potatoes is a big hit right now - she loves it on her kibble in the warm weather! I feed that only occasionally - see the potato warning above.
