Title: Flying with dogs
Post by: Julie on June 20, 2006, 08:43:33 AM
Has anyone every flown with their puppers?  How did it go?  Did you get to take them in the cabin with you, or did they have to be checked as baggage?

I picked up our rescue "Bean" in Orlando, Florida, the end of August, last summer, and returned to Denver 3 hrs later.  He did amazingly well, considering he had never seen me before, had had a tough life till he was rescued, and spent 5 hours in a carrier under the seat, because the Marine drill sergeant of a flight attendant wouldn't let me hold him, that isn't always the case.  I had Ace w/ me just in case, but he didn't need it.  Dramamine also works well for dogs, as does Rescue Remedy.

Many airlines no longer allow dogs in the cabin because of allergies of some travelers.  Frontier has a pressurized critter area.  Most airlines don't allow dogs in the hold between May and October, because it isn't temperature controlled or pressurized. If the temp is below 32, some airlines wont allow animals in the hold either.  I would NEVER put a Dachshund in the hold.  I'm a paranoid Mama, but given their size, it's just too dangerous.  I know lots of people do it.  I would not.

Google "flying with dogs" and you will get more info than you ever wanted.  Call the airlines that are going to your destination, and ask, ask, ask questions.  Call back several times.  I got a lot of conflicting info, and was moved from my reserved seat because I was flying with a dog!  It was not a good flight for the human, the Bean didn't seem any the worse for the experience.

Good luck!

I flew with Misty once, from Anchorage to Seattle, a three-hour flight.  She got to be in the cabin with me, I made arrangements with the airline beforehand (you HAVE to do this.)  At the time, they only allowed one or possibly two animals in the cabin at a time.  Anyway, Misty slept in her sherpa bag on the floor the entire way.  The guy sitting next to me didn't even know I had a dog until I picked up Misty's sherpa after we landed.
I would not consider putting a dog in the hold.
I hope this helps.

You can also check with your vet and see if he can give Miss Libby a light sedative which will just make her drowsy and hopefully forget about barking at the passengers.

I flew with Heidi when she was a 5-month old pup from CA to MO and back.  Brekke and I flew from CA to MO and back when she was 5 months old, and from CA to TX and back, when she was 2.  I always booked as "pet in cabin", and usually, they have only one or two per flight in cabin.  They must fit in an airline-approved container, and be kept in this all through the flight.  The animal must have a veterinary checkup and paperwork a maximum 10 days before the original departing flight. Occasionally, no one would even know I had a dachsie with me, but often, the flight crew would ask to see my furkid!  It used to be $75 one way, plus vet checkup - probably more now!

Very good information.  I found the exact same things to be true when I flew with Misty.  Its a good idea to double check all the details with the airlines.

NO!  Sedatives at altitude have a negative effect on dogs Please check this out with yer vet.  Personally I would try an aroma therapy method  When puppies are nice and calm, put a lavender sachet near them.  Do this every day when they are nice and quite.  THEN when you take the trip, put a sachet on the outside of the bag.  They will associate the smell with being calm and relaxed.

Also ask your vet about Rescue Remedy.  Heard it really works.

I've never flown with my girls but if I did, I would NEVER, EVER EVER put them in the cargo hold.  I've read many horror stories about dogs dying because the airlines did not pressurize the cargo hold properly or the baggage handlers mishandled the crate and the dog got loose.  This happened to a whippet at the Westminster show this year.  Somehow her crate opened as she was being loaded onto the plane and she ran off and as far as I know has never been found.

I'm sorry this sounds really negative but most airlines say they will allow dogs in the cabin as long as they fit under the seat.
