I will be out of touch until I return from my vacation on June 6th. Lots of family start arriving tonight. Sisters, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephew (only have one nephew). This Sunday is what we are calling the Sisters Open House. My sisters and their families are coming over to celebrate our new house with us. We'll also have a couple of friends join us too. We are going to have a feast -- ham, teriyaki chicken, quiche, scalloped potatoes, bean salad, cabbage pizza, garden salad, rolls, pickled beets, cranberry sauce, several appetizers, apple pie, ice cream and brownies.......so far!
During the week I will spend a few days hanging out at the family cabin with my sister Joan and her husband Butch from Juneau. They will be here for 10 days. We hope to get out one day and do some target practice with our handguns. Hopefully there will be a salmon feast since Butch is a commercial fisherman who owns his own boat.
On June 2nd. we are all heading down to Homer, AK to spend the weekend with my sister down there. My niece and her boyfriend, who also live in Homer, built a cabin this past winter, and we will be having a house warming for them.
Dan and I are in the process of planning our really big Open House, for friends, co-workers and family, on June 17th. So, if any of you are in the area..........
During my time off, I plan on including my weener dogs as much as I can. Lots of walks and time at the cabin. Got Willy a new t-shirt that fits him well and seems to be keeping the rash from being too bad.
Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and I will check in when I return to work on June 6th.
Hopefully the ground will thaw soon and you will have internet at home. We are really wanting to see pictures of the house now that it is furnished!!
I hope you have a great time. Every time I hear about Homer, Alaska I think about Tom Bodette's book As Far As You Can Go Without a Passport. It is a wonderful read about life in that part of Alaska. It is filled with short stories and I've read it several times.
Can't wait to hear about all of your family adventures.

We've been having record high temps around here -- upper 75-80 -- so I imagine the perma frost should be thawing out pretty good. Shouldn't be long before we get our phone line. I plan to take lots of pictures of our party on Sunday, and of the house. Dan said that we can still download them onto a diskette which I can take to work so I can post them.
By the way, "hot" for our area is 85-90. 90 is actually pushing it, but we don't usually get those temps until July. I know that sounds mild to a lot of you, but I start to melt at 80.
I have not read Tom Bodette's book, but I'm sure he portrays Homer accurately. Homer could be a coastal town in Maine or Oregon easily. Its a wonderful, quaint little town. I love going down there. When we all go down, we always have an evening of beach walking on Homer Spit where we collect agates. I love the ocean and the Spit is a beautiful place to walk.
If I can find a copy of Bodette's book somewhere (probably at a used bookstore now) I'll pick it up and send it to you. You will love it since you will recognize the areas he talks about. His book was the first thing that made me want to take a trip to Alaska. I'll let you know when I find it. Actually I just realized that I need you to PM me your new address.
You're right that your temps don't seem too bad, but I would think that for you they are awful. You don't have air conditioning, right? That is the only way to survive. here. We've actually had a mild spring with lots of temps in the 70's and low 80's, but this weekend is going to be 85-90. I'm dreading it because that is the highest I want it to be for the whole summer and I know that isn't possible.

The houses here don't usually come with air conditioning. However, all the cars do, thank goodness, my car gets pretty hot sitting in the parking lot all day. Our new home is very energy efficient. You'd think with the sun pouring in those big windows all day (we have a southeastern exposure) it would get pretty warm in there, but its hasn't been overly warm when I get home in the later afternoon. Also, we get great air circulation when we open a window upstairs and a couple downstairs. We are very pleased with how easy it is to regulate the temperature in the house.
I don't think I could live in a place where its so hot that you need air conditioning, or its too hot to enjoy the outdoors. I love having my windows opened. To have the house all closed up on a sunny day makes me feel like I will suffocate.
Do you consider 40 cold? And 60 "light jacket weather."??? Isn't it funny what people get acclimated to?
Have a great time and don't forget to post DOD when you get back!!!
Patty - it sounds like a ton of fun - you deserve to relax !!! Have a wonderful time and we will be anxious to see all the pictures!
Have a great time!By the way;my family and I are going to Tennessee end of July!
Kelly, what part of Tennessee are you going to be in? Meghan is staying in Nashville this summer (trying it out in case she decides to stay after graduation next year) and I may be up there with my mom and sister in law and neices the last weekend in July.
