Title: Ear Flip
Post by: Mike on May 25, 2006, 07:01:47 AM
Seeing Bish's picture with the ears flipped back reminds me that I have NEVER actually seen Clifford flip his ears back.  I'll look over at him and they will just be back.  Have any of you out there actually seen your furkid(s) flip them back?

I love that picture of him, our neighbor took that after a long walk a couple of days ago. His ears are always flipped back, esp. when he turns his head real quick or he runs around like a crazy potato head. Cindy (our neighbor) calls him the "ram dog" when his ears do that. I just love it! When his ears do that I tell him "Bish where are your ears? Silly boy fix your ears!" Then he will shake his head usually ending up with "Mini Pin" ears. Glad you enjoied his picture. Here it is again (I couldnt resist!)

I've never seen Berman or Lucy purposely flip their ears back.  It usually happens when they are playing or running.  Berman used only flip one ear back, but now he sometimes does both.  I think he's self conscious about his balding head (he has very thin hair) and he's using his ear as a comb over!  When I take them for a walk, I try to keep their ears down because I'm afraid they'll get sunburned!

amy and emma always flip them back. Amy hates them fliped, as I sometime try it to keep the hair out of her dinner.

Minna flips her ears back before she eats.  I guess she doesn't want to get them dirty while eating.

I think it has to do with the ear weights.   Rudy's ears were smaller and lighter than Max's and the more readily flipped over.   Rudy didn't seem to mind and would walk around all day with them like that if need be.   Max has bigger ears that don't flop so easily.  Max doesn't like them flipped over.  Occasionally, they would flip when he was being very active, but that doesn't happen too much these days.

A good clue on whether your dog is an ear flipper is to hear what kind of sound they make when they shake themselves.  The smaller, lighter ears tending to make a flap-flap-flap noise when they shake, thus making them more susceptible to flipping.   The heavier ears make a flop-flop-flop noise, and aren't as susceptible to flipping.   Of course, this only works for smoothies.   Longhaireds have more hair on their ears which mutes the flapping, flopping or flipping.

While I've never seen them DO it, my girls seems to LIKE their ears flipped, especially Maddie.  And when they go for walkies or to the park, it seems that they almost always have one ear flipped.  Kind of a signal, maybe?  We call 'em their rally ears (like when baseball players flip their caps around to rally for their team) OR in Maddie's case, we call it her gang ears.  She looks like a tough little gangsta ready to take on the big dawgs. :headbang:

I've never seen it!  LOL....although Oscy's ears are ALWAYS somewhat flipped!
Buelah's when she is playing and Toby's hardly ever flip!  Great question!   :thumb:
