Title: Plan X-Pen
Post by: PattyInAK on April 03, 2006, 09:24:22 AM
We bought two x-pens over the weekend.  Hooked them together to provide Willy, Alex and Misty a big area in which to spend their days.  We set it up in the laundry room, which really doesn't utilize the space very well.  I think I would like to move them into the entry hall.  Its tiled the same as the laundry room so floor finishes aren't a problem, and the dogs could spread out more.  Our entry hall is more of an "area" than a hallway, its 6 feet wide.  I think if they were in that area, it would be more like when they were in the kitchen at the old place.  Will see how they do today.  Gosh, I hate leaving them in the new house alone.  They are still a little confused but much better than a week ago.

If the entry hall allows them to see out the windows some, even from a distance, that may be your best bet. I have a feeling the lack of windows is one of the big problems. Can't wait to read tomorrow's post

I second the entry also - if they can see more....I bet they will be happy puppers !!!!  Sounds like a good set up - did you "practice" over the week end to see if they could get out?  Or does it have the lid?

They will be able to see out the big windows from a distance if they are in the entry hall.  I have a picture of the hall I can post here.  I also think the lack of windows and the feeling of open space is part of the problem.  We did not get the chance to "practice" over the weekend, and the x-pen does not have a lid.  We got the 30" high one, and hopefully my dogs aren't climbers.  I will be getting off work a little bit early today, I can't wait to get home to see how they did.  I still feel really bad leaving them.  They were very OK with the set up at the old house, they would just automatically go into the kitchen and bed down when it was time for us to leave.  I know they will adjust to the new house, but this learning curve is tough.

This is the view the dogs would have, this picture is rather dark due to it being later afternoon in the dead of winter in Alaska.  We have a southern exposure and the sun just pours in these windows now.  I think the dogs would really have a feeling of a lot of space.

I vote for the entry way - I think they will like the open space better and the possibility of seeing out the windows!

I agree, Kari.  I just want them to be comforable and feel secure.  I think the laundry room feels too much like a closet to them.
