Title: Lily Update!
Post by: Nikki on March 22, 2006, 01:09:36 PM
I took Lily back to the surgeon's office on Monday for her 6 week check up.  They said her neruological functions were at 100% and they couldn't have asked for a better result from her surgery.  She is off full time crate rest.  She will still be crated when I am not home to supervise, since Lily wants to wrestle with Minna.  Here is my great big confession----I AM PETRIFIED TO LET HER DO ANYTHING!!!!!  I am so afraid to let her out of my sight for more than a minute.  I know I can't keep her safe every second, but I think I will die if anything happens to her.  She tried to jump up on the couch last night and I thought I was going to have a stroke.  We have a ramp, so I guess I will enter into some intensive training time with her to get her to use it instead of jumping.  Any body have a doxie bubble that I can put her in for a while?  :wink3:

Great news !!!!    You are 100% a doxie mom who's baby has had surgery....of course you don't want her to do anything !!!!    It will get easier to let go and let her actually walk somewhere instead of being carried...hee hee, just kidding.  Seriously - that is normal.  Although Rudy has never had surgery, with his couple of episodes - I just followed him everywhere.....and continually told him SLOW, SLOW, SLOW......it was funny because he knew exactly what that meant.  He would be stepping up the pace a litte and I would say it and immediatly he would shut down   :hello2:

So glad that Lily is back to 100% - that is great news !  Go Lily Bug !

That is great news !!!  When Ozzy got so sore after his injection, I followed him around the house, too.  Glad to hear Lily is doing well.

IT is perfectly normal to be concerned!  I dare say you will always be more aware of things, but that gradually you will be able to let Lily have more freedom and less worry.

I've been there!

Roscoe's recovery was not 100% - he has some permanent nerve damage in his left rear leg - and I was the same way.  Terrified.  The surgeon wanted us to gradually give Roscoe more of his freedom.  We did that.  We are 4 1/2 months past his surgery now and life is pretty much back to normal for him.

For the first  3 months, Roscoe never tried to jump on the furniture.  I thought I had "cured" him of that habit.  I was wrong.  He was just building up those back leg muscles I guess.  I went outside to take out the trash and as I was walking back up the driveway, I saw it.  Roscoe's nose peeking through the shades in the front window.  He was not only ON the couch, he had climbed up the back of the couch to look out!  I about had a heart attack right then and there.

I can't leave my three running free in the house without supervision anymore because I know he'll get up there.  Gwen does it too.  Rudy is the only one who won't do that.  I never left them out for very long unsupervised, but now I gate them in the kitchen even if I'm just running a quick errand.

Glad Lily recovered so well!

That is great news Nikki!! 100% is awesome!!  :thumb: Once you see she starts to do things and doesn't get hurt, you will relax some. I think we have to actually go through something like this, to realize how awful it is and really put the screws to the jumping and what not. After Jessie had surgery, I was the same way, a nervous wreck. My friends all give me a bad time how protective I am of Hallie but they don't realize, you will do anything to protect them. It is tough to keep them from jumping especially when you have multiple doxies, they follow each other! You'll do great and she'll be just fine, as you said her outcome couldn't have been any better. Yeay!

How wonderful that she is doing so well....and how perfectly normal for you to feel the way you do!   She is a very lucky little girl to have such a loving and caring mama!  :)

That's great news for Lily.  I know just how you feel, having slept on the floor for almost 7 months after Clifford's 1st surgury.  You will relax..... eventually....

I am so glad Lily is doing so well!!  I can understand why you would be so worried it is perfectly natural.  I am sure you will both be fine.   Just remember the more you let her do, the quicker she will return to her old self.  I do think it is a good idea to work on the jumping though.  I need to train my puppy to use his ramps and stairs instead of jumping so we can prevent future problems for him.  How frequent are back problems for this breed?  I have had 4 before and never had one with any problems so I'm just curious.  Hope Lily continues to feel great!!

Most sources seem to suggest that 1 in 4 dachshunds will battle IVDD.

2 of my 3 have been treated for it, but only Roscoe has needed surgery so far.

Never going through this, I can only imagine.  I'd be a paranoid mess.  Fantastic that Lily is going so great.  That made my day! :thumb:
