Hi! I am a new member and a new Doxie owner. I have two new 9 week old babies, brother and sister, Mercedes and Beemer (BMW Esq.). :meme:
I wrote on the other board and it was recommended that I post here too.
Beemer and Mercedes are the product of a father/daughter breeding. The mom labored for three days and had a c-section and spay. It was an oops! breeding. There were three puppies -- one with intestines on the outside of body -- this baby was euthenized by the vet -- he stated there was no hope for the baby.
Beemer and Mercedes both have developed very slowly. They are about 3-4 weeks behind where they should be in activity and socialization. Mercedes has caught up in size, eating and activity. Beemer is still behind in weight.
Both babies, however, experience what appears to be panic attacks. They will be frightened for no apparent reason and scream as if they were in great pain. They run around, sometimes in circles, until they can find a place to hide. There they will remain until they calm down. If you try to pick them up to calm them down, they lash out, swinging head and biting anything in the way.
Beemer shows this behavior even more than Mercedes and he apparently has serious speration anxiety issues. I found if I leave him alone but keep in eye contact with him that he realizes I am there for him and eventually he will come around. He crawls into my lap and shivers for awhile. Within a short while he will get down and start playing with his sister. In all the years I have had dogs, I have never seen this behavior exhibited so early.
They go back to the vet in two weeks for their second set of shots. I will present this to him then.
The other thing was that when they came to me they had fleas and ticks. Because of their age and size I could not use any of the chemically based shampoos. I used dial liquid bath soap for a very brief bath and then used a flea comb to remove any remaining freeloaders. I then sprayed them with lemon tonic water (homemade). This is something safe and can be used liberally.
Take a lemon thinly sliced in 1 pint of boiling water. Let steep overnight. Remove lemon slices and pour into a spray bottle or covered container. May use as often as necessary.
The lemonene removes the fleas waxy coating -- they dehydrate and die. It is a natural insect repellent and so far it is working. Make sure to get the liquid into the skin.
If anyone has ever experienced these panic attacks with their Doxies I would be interested to know your take on the matter and what you did.
Thanks to all, Bev
Hi Bev,
We just love those names!
It sounds as if your babies are off to a hard start. I can't offer any suggestions .... just wish them well.
:hello2:
Hi Bev- glad to see you here !!!! Look forward to hearing about your babies as they grow. I would ask the vet about the panic attacks - it may just be something they outgrow once they feel comfortable in their forever home. I love their names !!! Hope to see some pictures soon ! What part of the country do you live in?
Hi Beverly!
I'm sorry I don't know what advice to offer on the panic attacks you wrote about on the other version of Wiener Writings, but I did want to say "Welcome" and let you know we are glad you are here.
Great tip about the lemon tonic! Thanks!
Hi Bev, it's Georgia! This site is better and more fun. Welcome!
:grin:Hi Barb! Thank you for the kind welcome. Mercedes and Beemer live with me in Pima, AZ. Believe it or not, it is on the map. HAHA
I have taken some pictures of the babies and hope to have them developed soon. I always wanted a mini and fell in love with the dapple. They look just like my bassett mix, Buford. However Mercedes and Beemer are smooth reds. they were given to me and beggars cannot be choosey. I would not trade these guys for the world.
Again thank you and hope to talk again soon. Bev
