Title: Dachshunds and collars
Post by: Dottiesdoxies on August 21, 2005, 08:04:13 AM
I posted this message on the other message board I use and I noticed in your pic's of Penny, she is wearing a collar.  I recently found out first hand why you shouldn't keep a collar on any dog 24/7.  George and Grace were playing under my desk chair, George somehow got his rabies tag caught in a slot in the chair.  He got scared and pulled, strangling himself.  I had gotten up to get coffee and when I came back to the room, I saw him stuck and he couldn't breathe.  I held him so that he couldn't struggle and he could breathe.  I screamed for my son's, it took several minutes for us to remove the collar.  He was ok, bruised neck the vet said, but scared me to death!    :cussing:
Grace was already micro-chipped, George was micro-chipped the same day.  No more collars around home.  Collars are for outings only. :doah:
It took another 15 minutes to free the tag from the chair.  If I had not been home, he would have died a horrible death. :crybaby2:
I found a web site http://keepsafecollar.com/index.cfm they sell break away collars to prevent something like that from happening.  :apls:
Micro-chipping is also a good idea, if they ever should escape!  I have posted this everywhere I can to hopefully prevent another dog from having this problem!

Glad to here that you know about that hazzard!  I used to use breakaway halters on my horses years ago, don't have any now, I should have thought of that!  It was so scary seeing George like that!  I really felt responsible, this is something I should have known better about!  But all is well here, just wanted to let everyone know the info! :thumb:  Maybe help someone from going throught something terrible!
I really love those smileys here, they make you grin!  Very nice to meet you!  Dottie

That is horrible, but I am glad he is alright :icon_compress: Like my husband said (Drew) Penny wears a breakaway collar, but sometime she gets it off herself. She stays in our bakyard while we are at work and I want to make sure if she got out by some strange reason that people would be able to contact us. Thanks for the information and for getting the posting rolling  I think that the smilies are so fun too!

My doglets only wear colors with tags if we go somewhere that requires them.  A friend of mine ordered my kids nylon colors with their name and phone number embroidered on.  They wear these all the time - and they are very thin and very light.  Scary scary that their tags can get caught  :mblah05:
