Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you could direct a few rays our way? I had a baking mishap on Wednesday that mad a terrible mess in the oven. I had printed one of Emiril's streusel topped muffin recipes from the internet, and it pretty much oozed out of the pans and most of it ended up on the bottom of the oven. We have had it over a year and have never cleaned it, so I decided it was time. So when I got home from work Thursday I read the instruction manual for our self cleaning oven. This new oven is the first self cleaning oven I have ever owned, so I had no idea what to expect. The manual said there may be an odor and possibly some smoke, especially the first time it was cleaned. It sounded like no big deal, but it was! There was an acrid odor and my eyes were burning. Fortunately the evening was chilly but not terribly cold, so I opened the front and back doors to ventilate, but it didn't help much. Leopold, being a bit smarter than I am, went into the nerdery to get as far away from the oven as possible. Unfortunately it was not far enough for his delicate lungs (He is suffering from a lung disease similar to emphysema). He was coughing so hard all night long, and has had frequent coughing episodes Thursday night and last night. Today seems to be a bit better, and I hope that he gets some rest tonight. I am filled with worry and guilt that this oven cleaning may have caused additional damage to his lungs. I honestly had no idea it would be this bad, because my mom had a self cleaning oven, and when she used it the house smelled a bit funny, but it was no big deal.
As for me, I dumped a pot full of boiling water on my feet yesterday. The tops of my feet have third degree burns. The left few has some small blisters, but the right foot is basically one large blister. The pain is better now, but I will be on crutches for a couple of weeks and cannot wear shoes. I will also need to go to a burn center early next week. Tomorrow there are two major rites at church for the convert candidates. I am sponsoring someone, and I worry I may not be able to be there for both rites. I just hate the idea of letting her down, especially since I sponsored someone last year and missed the same rites due to a virus. I'll need to work Monday, and I will need to decide whether to brave 30 miles of Washington, DC traffic so I can park at the door of my building, or walk five blocks from the subway to the office on crutches. I am leaning toward the opinion that driving on I-66 is worse torture than hobbling along on crutches.
So please send rays, because with the acrid air, Poldie's lungs, burned feet, missing out on a rite and letting someone down, Washington traffic, and no muffins, we have had a very tough week.
Jeri
Major Rays coming your way! I am so sorry about you having such a tough week!
We are sending mega HHHHHHH's & PPPPPPP's for you both. :bandaid:
I know how those burns can be. I scalded the top of my foot when I was in Jr High .....many years ago. It was from boiling water that I was using with epson salts to soak a cut on my foot. It never got that far before the pan with the water tipped on my foot.
Take care of Poldie and yourself.

Jeri,
I am so sorry for your terrible week. Our  are with you guys. As for 30 miles of DC traffic, I live in the DC/Baltimore area, so I know what you mean....LOL Can you say "mixing bowl", scare me!
Look, send me an email or pm if I can help give you a ride. I am north of DC, but probably not too far a ride for me, so if I can help let me know. I hope you all are better soon!
Dottie

OH NO! Jeri, rays coming your way full force. I can't think of anything nastier than a bad burn. :comfort: for you AND our sweet Poldie.
Sorry it took us so long to respond.
Sending major rays your way. I had a buddy of mine burn his foot in a similar manner. He was okay, but I remember the blister was HUGE, and he was not a happy camper. I can't remember what his healing time was, but it wasn't very long.
I would have to agree that walking a few blocks on crutches is far easier than having to deal with I-66. I've had to drive all the major highways in the Baltimore/Washington area at some point, and I can honestly say that 66 (at least out to Manassas) is by far my least favorite to drive.
