Has anyone ever pottybox (litterbox) trained their doxie? I just bought a "secondnature" litter box this weekend for Bishop (well 2 one for my house and one for my neighbor that's where he hangs out during the day) because he wont go potty outside -unless its at his "Grandparents" with his Auntie dogs, and I want something a little more "stable" than just wee wee pads. I asked the people on Craigslist and all i got was a rude responce accusing me that i am a BYB or a puppy mill person- can you believe that! What nerve! I am getting so tired of the negativity on that site. Anywhoo, I know it will take a while for Bishy to get the hang of it, i definitely dint expect him to get it over night . So i am following the directions in the booklet that came with it but does anyone know of a special trick to get him to actually "go" in the box? :dontknow: Because I have been leaving one wee wee pad in the litter box and slowly moving another towards the box, he is totally wee wee pad trained so he has been going on the pads but wont step paw near the box or he will and then as soon as my hubby or I praise him he jumps out and gos on the pad out side the box. Sorry bout the long post i just was wondering if anyone had any advice! Thanks for your help!
I don't have any specific advice for you, but it sounds like you are on the right track. Maybe if you see him getting ready to go on the pad you can pick him up and move him to the box?? And Treats, Treats, Treats!! When we first got Penny we were going to litterbox train her, but she kept eating the litter and just playing in the box and never going potty in it. Eventually we just got a doggie door.
Good Luck!!
I actually have that same system for Cajsa. She's 3 now and is good about going to it rather than everywhere else. I started when she was a puppy but it pretty much works the same way as paper training. What you might do is put in a pee-pad then put a little bit of litter over it. Then when you see he needs to go potty put him in the box and block his exits! When he pees/poops in it praise like crazy! Treats are good too. Eventually you'll be able to not put the pee pad in the box and just have the litter.
If he's getting out when you praise him for being in it, wait until he's peed in it to praise him. It may be confusing to him otherwise? ALso maybe not having two pee pads in different areas. If there's only one and it's in the box in the same place the pee pad normally is then it would be closer to what he's used to and may be easier for him to make the connection. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions!
